electric fan advice

I am considering going to an electric fan system on my 72. I don't know much about them. I know there are some cheap ones out there, but I want to know what the best ones are. I currently have a single core radiator which i will be swapping out for a four-core. Any input on this would be appreciated.

Re: electric fan advice

I am going to use the jeep set up but it will be a few more months before I could tell you how well it works. From initial reports it works great unless you plan on towing a lot.

If you want the best, get Spal fans and a tight fitting shroud.

Re: electric fan advice

Wes at classic heartbeat sells a duel fan and shroud that is pretty straight forward for our trucks.

Re: electric fan advice

I'm using the Jeep fan. So far no problems. I have it running with a 180 degree tstat probe and a manual off/on switch under the dash in case the tstat ever fails. The fan fit is perfect in the stock shroud. Also I am using a 2 row radiator. Runs between 175-195 degrees on my 383 engine w/auto. All total, I have around $55 in this setup. I got the fan off Ebay for $25.

Re: electric fan advice

Keep in mine the amp draws on some of those fans are pretty high & your alternator might not be big enough. Just a thought...

Re: electric fan advice

so I received the Jeep fan today... quick question...

I might sound a bit ignorant here, but..
In the FAQ thread, everybody talks about the relay and the thermal switch. Are these really necessary? Can I not just hook it straight up to ignition power, running always when the truck is running? What benefit would it have kicking on and off?

Thanks

Re: electric fan advice

th relay is for running high amperage thru a low amperage switch and the thremal switch is kind of what it states kicks on at a cetain temp and shuts off at another..

i just went with a 30 amp switch and i run the fans when im not moving.. a bit of a pain for some but eases my mind when i drive.

Re: electric fan advice

My 454BB was running cool on the street but crazy hot while wheelin, using the GM 4 row radiator. I put a dual fan set up from FlexLite pulling and wired the A/C fan to the dual set up to push (3 fans total) made it better but still a bit hot while wheelin (not good for wheelin the Calif. dessert). finally broke bread and got a Griffin (2) 1 1/4 row radiator and it made a huge difference ! Back to what was said about the alternator. After the 3 fan set up at high RPM's the stock alternator was only putting out 10 volts at its best while running the A/C, then I turn on then radio with amplifier and it went down to 8-9 volts (not good having a dead batt. in the Calif. dessert) so I had my buddy install a 110 amp internal regulated alternator. now the voltage gauge barely drops from 12-14 volt's with everything on.

The issue is that if the fans runs consatntly, the engine takes much longer to warm up. If it's always hot where you are amybe it's not a problem, but in Illinois, you want it thermo controlled.

Re: electric fan advice

Thanks 67mater... I'm in Cali so I don't really need the thermal hook-up. Would the relay be needed if I'm not going to use the thermal switch?

Yes. It takes the load away from the switch itself. These fans are a big draw, the relay shortens the wiring run and saves the switch.
You might as well use the thermal switch though. There is no need to run the fans at highway speed....trying to turn it on/off by hand will get old pretty quickly. Why run them when you don't need to? It is just more taxing to the charging system.
