How many miles is too many?
I found a 2012 chevy truck for sale, it's a long bed crew cab 2500 6.0 4x4.
Has 199,xxx.x miles for $7999.00. Looks fairly clean for something around my area (rust wise) but has a few dings and dents. If I had to guess I'd say it was and old service truck. I prefer long bed trucks so that's my draw to it, crew cab I could do without but it's not a turnoff either. I drive 4 miles one way to work and put maybe 50 extra miles on that week going elsewhere. So must of my vehicles die becouse of rust and not mileage. So my question is - does that truck have tomany miles for the price Or for the life expectancy of drivetrain? Any input at all is appreciated. Thanks P.s. I also take trips throughout the summer driving around 5 to 7 hrs one way (sometimes pulling a small trailer too). |

Re: How many miles is too many?
Maintenance on the truck would be most important. Have a mechanic look at it. I have seen some of these trucks that have 300k and still run good. Is it local, not salted too bad?

Re: How many miles is too many?
The miles are a little high for my liking but the body's are the downfall on the 07-13 trucks IMO
Here in my area most are rusting pretty good already

Re: How many miles is too many?
The milage is high but not really high. For a 7 year old truck I would assume that is alot of interstate milage. Make sure that you have a good grand onhand for stuff that needs fixed. Oil changes for the driveline, belts, hoses, brakes and tune up add up quick. That's not mentioning any other items found worn. Old service trucks usually have alot of idle time so add that in. See if you can pull up the hour meter and see the run hours. I am not sure if you can do that on a 2012 Chevy or not.

Re: How many miles is too many?
I might see things a little differently from others. I've bought a lot of used vehicles and I'm not too scared of miles. I look at cost per mile first and go from there.
I figure most modern trucks are good for around 250,000 miles, so I subtract the odometer mileage from that and divide the cost by the miles remaining. After doing that, I look at what currently needs to be fixed and probable maintenance costs. After doing all of that, I consider things like appearance and convenience items. If, after going through all of that, I feel the deal is good enough, I feel pretty good about buying.

Re: How many miles is too many?
Our 88 xj has less than 100K, but it has lots of weird noises. I think the fix is earplugs or a loud radio

Often times they get worked much harder than a 1500. A quick search found this one with less than half the miles. Runs like new 130k miles 4x4 Clean title Financing and warranty available 10500 cash or 2000 down to finance Call or text me 8178410327

Re: How many miles is too many?
That truck should have an hour meter that you can access. The number of hours can can tell you a lot about how the truck was used. Anything over an average speed of about 32 MPH is not bad. The 2006 I bought new and sold in 2015 had an average speed of 48 MPH and that was virtually all Interstate highway miles pulling a 5th wheel at 68-70 MPH. Very few city miles.
