Air-O carpet

I saw another thread about carpet but it is for cars. It made me think of a new carpet made by Mohaw called Air-O and I’ve been installing lots of it lately. It has the pad constructed to the back of the carpet. No latex in the carpet. Using “advanced” polymers. So it’s made of plastic. I heard a Rep say that it’s technically not categorized as carpet. It’s supposed to be hypoallergenic and VOC free. They say that the fibers don’t absorb or moister so no growth of allergens and microbes.
Super easy to install if its on a concrete floor. It’s a bear to position on wood subfloors. The kicker is you don’t power stretch it, it’s a loose lay. Don’t need a knee kicker. Double face tape the perimeter and seams. The down side to installing it is if you have tackstrip down, it needs to be removed.
I’ve been installing it for about six months now, meaning you guys on the coast have probably known about it for years.
Has anyone here heard of it or had it installed in your home?

Yes, we've moved on from that and onto the next thing, about six months ago. Now it's Air-No. It's designed to absorb foul odors from the air since the carpet odor that used to mask that was taken out with Air-O.

Seriously, no. This is news to me. Does it come in any colors besides green?

Interesting. I have never heard of it until now, but then again I haven't had any carpeting for 30+ years. Not sure how I would be with out some creaky wood floors to alert me of child activity or other stuff.

I’ve only seen it in two colors, beige and brown.
I know I sound like an ad but no more scuffing the walls.

Easy on the knees, ey? The problem I see is a manufacturer taking some of the skills and labor required for installation out to promote their product. Putting more money toward the product and less to the mechanic. That is what I have experienced with maintenance-free siding and trim going from aluminum to vinyl. With vinyl they make pre-fab window trim (lineals), eliminating the need to be skilled at break work. Anyone can handle the siding where the aluminum took a special touch. Now more people install their own vinyl and same with general contractors/carpenters who wouldn't touch the aluminum. A lot of crappy vinyl siding put up on houses, but too late for a skilled professional once installed. It's no longer seen as a specialty. Anyone can do it

Anyone can lay carpet in a home or office, but it’ll still take some experience to cut it in and seam it up.
I think the snap and click laminate and now LVP, luxury vinyl plank is sort of the same concept. Geared towards the diy homeowner. I’m still doing lots of lvp but most of it is a full spread glue down. I’m actually considering going to work at a place in the town I live in that builds yard trucks. My knees are good but my elbows, wrists and hands aren’t faring so well. 30 years as my own boss, not sure I can punch a clock. Im glad that I don’t work out in the extreme heat and cold.

They introduced it January 1st 2017. There are 5 colors with 2 different weights for 3 of the colors. I am thinking about using it for my basement "Man Cave". The room is 15x26. Overall it is about the same price as a good interlocking vinyl plank floor. My basement floor is 3/4" plywood and I am going to put down 1/4" luan underlayment before installing the flooring. I think it woud work good for the area.

Hey Leon, make sure you have it in place because it is super hard to move a long cut that’s on wood. You probably know that you can’t top cut your seams. Got to straight edge the back. Mohawk double face tape is way expensive too. The have a glue for the perimeter if you want to go that route but it sounds like you know more about this stuff than I.

I have never top cut any of my seams anyway so I wouldn't have tried it on this one. I was just going to glue the seams being that it's on a wood subfloor, no perimeter glue. I wouldn't think it would be a problem.

Sounds like it might be good for residential rentals. I have been replacing with vinyl plank to get away from any kind of carpet.

It’s on the expensive side but, you don’t need pad. As an installer “if” I had rentals, that’s what I’d go with.
