Barn door vs Gate sill plates

I've been discussing a barn door and lift gate swap with a friend. I'm going to go with barn doors on my build instead of the lift gate. Are the rear sill plate areas different? Originally my 70 was lift gate and the guy I sold it to put on barn doors. Now with the 68 body I'm using it will get barn doors instead of the lift gate assembly that is on it.

Re: Barn door vs Gate sill plates

Paul,
I got digging around in my saved pictures and this is the lower sill that another member had for sale at one time. It was from a tailgate style burb and it looked different then the barn door sill on my panel. I am still trying to locate my panel pic and will post it up when I find it.

Re: Barn door vs Gate sill plates

this is what the barn door sill looks like. Truck is stored away or I would go take a better picture.

I think the main difference is the gate sill is stamped out for the lower hinges

Re: Barn door vs Gate sill plates

just did this swap last week. All the holes and nut plates for the doors are installed from the factory. You can reuse the side latches from the lower gate on the door bottoms but you will need one additional one for the left door on top. you might want to weld up the holes for the upper and lower gate hinges as they look a little hokey unused. You will need longer bolts to mount the doors , the ones from the upper and lower gate are the right thread and size , but really not long enough. other than putting the doors on and off about a dozen times to shim them to get the gaps somewhat close , it was pretty straight forward. I didn't reuse the barn door slider stops as I am going to buy struts ,just didn't get there yet. There is no way to reinforce that upper area where the slides mount that I can see .The lower recess where the latches mount is a little light duty , you may want to install e piece of 1/8- 3/16 plate under it to stiffen it up for the thru bolts. Also there are three or four anti vibration rubbers that I don't know where to source that should be installed.

Yes, you can't post a want to trade parts post unless you are a paying member. The reason for this rule is so there is some protection for the buyer, seller, and those wanting to trade parts. It is part of the site rules that everyone agrees to when they join the site. Many people fail to take the time to read the rules.... The subscription rates are listed under the word "Subscribe" in the menu bar above.
