Rear brake line/tanke hose questions

67 suburban with 72 rear drums and brakes

I just finished up rebuilding my rear drums, and of course i had to cut off my brake line since it was rusted up in the wheel cylinders. i bought the new fittings and was going to try and flare the lines myself, but its tough while the lines are on the truck (other fitting also stripped since they are rusted together).

So i go to look on lmctruck.com to order a new set, and for 30 bucks for both plus shipping isnt bad. question is, they have different part numbers for a 71 and 72. what is the difference?

ALSO, since i had my truck bagged, i just moved the fuel hose and brake hose out of the way but havent secured it yet. for the pump to hardline hose, does it matter that the hardline from the frame is lower than the hose? (i raised my tank up about 3 inches) i ran a new hose to the hardline like this...and i plan on zip tieing it to the brake tee on the axle...would it pose a problem running it like this?

Re: Rear brake line/tanke hose questions

The 71-72 steel lines had a different kind of "tee" if I remember correctly.
I would use a rubber insulated clamp to secure brake lines and fuel lines to your frame.
The vent hose off the rearend can be zip tied.

Buy some steel line and a good bender and flaring tool.
Learn to do this work yourself.
It's very rewarding to run clean steel lines on your truck.

Re: Rear brake line/tanke hose questions

i went ahead and ordered the 72 lines, i hope they fit my tee that i have. i really would like to bend my own lines, but after trying to flare the ones i had and botched em all up (i used a rental from advance auto)..i didnt really feel comfortable.

would it be a problem to mount that fuel line across the axle like factory? im not worried about the brake line, im leaving that how factory had it, even though its a bit of an eye sore. im thinking of connecting this rubber clamp on it and bolt it to the brake line tab...then zip tie the brake hose and fuel hose where they cross each other. im thinking there should be enough slack in the stock brake hose when the suspension travels up and down that it shouldnt pull.....i might even make a bracket to weld to the brake tab bracket that will bring it away from the bag more.

Re: Rear brake line/tanke hose questions

No way would I want a fuel line moving up and down with the suspension.
Or flopping in the wind.
Route it out of the way and tie it securely to the frame.
Use as little rubber line as possible.

Re: Rear brake line/tanke hose questions

Ah..ok. I thought that is how it was factory. Looking at it now, im guessing the metal tubing ended at the frame, and the hose was the rest of the way. Im going to try and get a bender and bend it up along the frame notch and see how far it goes...then maybe buy an 18" piece thats already flared, bend it around the rest of the notch and connect the 2 with a small hose, then connect the hose from the tank to it...?

Re: Rear brake line/tanke hose questions

After reading around online...could compression fittings work joining 2 cut lines instead of trying to flare them?

Re: Rear brake line/tanke hose questions

Inverted flare is what you need to do for fuel lines.

Re: Rear brake line/tanke hose questions

right..i found this line at oreilly, its 20" long, inverted flare fittings...problem is - the line coming off of the frame has no fitting, it just connects to the hose in the tank.

so what i was thinking of doing, was connecting the stock line to the new line via a very small rubber fuel hose, maybe 2" in length, then run the new line around the notch and back to the bottom of the frame, then connect it to the factory stock hose to the fuel tank.

i dont see any way to use the fittings unless i cut the stock line and add them on, which seems like a lot of unnecessary work... i hope im making sense here lol
