I had some 8 years ago paid a local garage to do a power steering conversion on my 66 and it was a great investment..drove so much better. As I have been tearing down the truck to restore I never really notice how horribly the caked on grime was. And since Im restoring I thought to clean it up and put some paint on it. Today I started to chisel off the crud and it got me wondering what I should be doing other than just a clean and paint. Since the gear box was removed from a 72 in a junk yard I found the 72 shop manual and it reads that it doesnt need anything unless its leaking. I am not sure if I should just leave it be, or have it serviced. If anyone has any pointers on this please let me know. Again, it worked great before it just looked terrible.

Just curious.. Is your system a ram type? Yours doesn't look like a regular 1972 power steering box..... Name: P18503.jpg

But to answer your question if it isn't leaking or binding a quick coat of paint would do .

Thanks for the reply, Ill keep cleaning and shoot paint.

What I ended up with in the conversion years ago wasnt a ram but a ream from the garage that didnt know what they were doing and in fact have long since been out of business. I had them at the time look at a transmission leak and the guy talked me into the PS conversion. Ended up costing me way wore than it should have. Now that have re read the thread I started back then not long before I did the tear down, I see that he said it was from a late 70s. I am curious now what its from.

Yeah, but those photos were mostly of the alternator, pulleys, water pump that were on my engine not the junkyard. From the cleaned PS gear box in the 1st post, is there a way to tell by number casting and such? Photobucket wreaks!

The first post on this thread looks like a manual gear box but I could be in error.

Curious here myself. I saw the pump in the other thread but that does appear to be a manual box.

The steering box in all of your pics above in this thread are an original '63-'66 manual steering box

Thanks Captain! Jeez Im losing it, I grabbed the gearbox out of the garage storage not remembering that the guy that did the work had returned it to me. Now Ill go digging for the actual gear box I removed during the teardown 4 years ago.

I should have looked at my tear down pics.

Looks like its cleaner than my original, thanks guys for helping me not waste more time sprucing it up!
