prepping headers for paint question...

I found an old set of dynomax 1 5/8 cerama coated long tube headers. The coating has peeled and flaked in multiple spots. I just want to paint them with some hi temp paint.

Do I need to sandblast these first??? I dont have access to a media blaster so id have to take it to a friends work when he can fit it in.

Or can these be scuffed by sanding by hand.im not looking for show quality just want to make them one color.

you can make them one color, but how long are you looking for that color to last? Every spray paint I've seen, ceramic, high temp, so on and so fourth, has burned off inconsistently on tubed headers. They look nice for a little while, but a ceramic coating jet hot is probably the only thing that is going to hold up in time. Folks, myself included have had good results with POR-15 coatings on cast iron manifolds, but that's a different animal. In your case, the amount of prep will dictate a matter of hours to days of paint adhesion, not months or years, for a spray on coating.

Must say, the dynomax longtubes are solid performance headers but I regret paying extra money for a coating that flaked off in areas

So media blasting might help , worst case ill just bolt em in as is, I think the flaking is near the bottom which wont be very visible.

yeah, if you really like those headers, then i'd say media blast and re-coat with some type of ceramic coating, which I believe most powder coating companies have some form of header coat. I know it's a bummer, it's just the nature of the beast. Maybe someone else can chime in with some type of spray paint that defies the laws of physics and has a kung fu grip on headers that will last a good while, I've just never heard of one!

For a real long term solution, its gonna take a full sandblast and good ceramic coating. Like leftybass said, your local custom powdercoater probably does it.

Appreciate the heads up that the rattle can stuff isnt gonna do me much good.ill see if my buddies shop with the media blaster also does coating.

I have been looking at some coatings by Techline Coatings and if you would want to try them out first and let me know I would be happy to listen haha. Called a powdercoating place and they said that is what they used with the best results. Not sure what I believe these days though.

Cerakote is where its at as far as material suppliers. I wouldn't use anything else. They have some pictures of my work on their website gallery. I'm not spamming either, I'm way booked up and couldn't take anymore work.

Draggin49 The guy at my parts house uses BBQ grille paint. Clean them real good and spray 3-4 coats of paint ,install them and then start the vehicle and run them till they start smokin and cut the vehicle off and do that 3 times and they will look good for a few years. I saw his and they looked good for being coated for around 5 years.good luck

BTW I'm going to try this on my next header change.

look up rewarder header, there in oxnard. they ceramic coat, blast em too
