72 4x4 6.0 liter 74mm turbo pics.

Here are a few pics of the turbo build/engine swap I am doing in my truck. I built all the motor mounts and fabbed all the turbo piping myself.

Ok... I have questions ;>)

What turbo is that?
Any idea on the AR?
How are you supporting the turbo?

Re: 72 4x4 6.0 liter 74mm turbo pics.

I spent about $300 for the parts for the headers and the crossover pipe. I bought all the 4" bends for the downpipe at the junkyard before they closed it down.

The turbo is a holset HT60 its off of a 14 liter cummins. The A/R is different than garrets. They go by cm, mine is a 26 cm which is about like a 1.3 on a garret. Its huge. It will be pretty slow to spool. I am running a 3500 converter, so it should be ok.

I am going to support it with some turnbuckles. One from the head and one to the frame.

Re: 72 4x4 6.0 liter 74mm turbo pics.

I bought the turbo thats on the truck now at the scrap yard. It was like $5. I have a couple that I bought down there. They closed the place down though

The one I am going to run I bought off of craigslist for $100. It is perfect. You should be able to find one for $150-200.

I also had to buy a wastegate. It was a cheapie off of ebay for $65. The carb hat was $75.

I'm curious. Wouldn't connecting the turbo to the frame create some stress in the system if either the frame and/or the engine mounts flexed? (I didn't see if you had solid mounts or not.)

Re: 72 4x4 6.0 liter 74mm turbo pics.

The motor mounts are solid. I am hoping I wont have any trouble. If I can I am going to run both turnbuckles off the motor, but I don't think its going to work. I am pretty sure I am going to have to run one to the frame.

That looks awesome. Nice work bro. Is it going to be an off-roading or a drag race truck?

Re: 72 4x4 6.0 liter 74mm turbo pics.

Why did you mount the WG that way?

The merge pipe and the angle coming out of the merge looks good, but I believe the WG would function better (control boost better) if it was mount right off the merge.

Hey Lynn,
What's up? Good to see you on this site. I had no idea that you were doing something like this. Looks good! What's the plans for it?
Talk to ya later!

Re: 72 4x4 6.0 liter 74mm turbo pics.

I don't have any real plans for the truck. I am not going to swamp it off in the mud like I used to. I may play a little off road, but I mainly want to play on the street and cruise around. I want to try and spin 39" tires at will. I don't think it will do it at first though. I think I'm gonna have to put forged internals and more boost.

I put the wastegate where I did mainly for ease of mounting. I didn't think it would affect the function one way or the other, but this is only my second turbo build so I'm still learning. I can always re do it if I don't like it.

The piping is 2.5" prior to the merge. The down pipe is 4".

Chris, How have you been? I didn't know you were on here.

Re: 72 4x4 6.0 liter 74mm turbo pics.

Been gettin' by. How about you? Have you done anything to the Camaro lately? Nice weather will be here before long (hopefully) and it'll be time to get these hot rods out again!!
Have you talked to Mike lately? What's he been up to?

Re: 72 4x4 6.0 liter 74mm turbo pics.

I've been doing good. Both boys are in school now, so I have a lot more time to work in the shop. Its more lonely now though!

I haven't done much to the camaro. I have had a bunch of trouble with the batteries spilling acid into the trunk (4th time now). I sprayed it down with baking soda and water and I'm gonna put an optima in it and hopefully that will fix it. If I can either sell my the motor out of the camaro or win the lottery, I am going to do the turbo LS deal to the camaro. For now I am going to just drive it and enjoy it.

Mike is keeping busy like always!

Re: 72 4x4 6.0 liter 74mm turbo pics.

Glad to hear you and the family are doing good!
Better enjoy the time you get with the boys; as you know, they grow up fast!! Keep 'em interested in hot rods, though, and you'll end up spending a lot of time with them.
Sounds like a cool plan for the Camaro. I've been wanting to try an LS-setup in mine, as well. I'm pretty content with the current motor for now, so it'll have to wait a while.
Take care Lynn, and I'm sure I'll be seeing ya as the weather starts getting nicer!!
