Great build. Keep up the good work. Nice to see a build coming out so nice without throwing tons of money at it

Thank You. It has taken longer than I wanted it to but the cab is coming along and now I have one more rust spot to take care of above the driver side windshield and then a few dents to pull on the roof and get the old paint off and prime and paint it. Top will be white and the rest midnight blue Hot Rod Flatz, with a fawn interior.

Thank you Don. The nail trick worked like a charm. Wish I had know about it sooner.

Thanks T.J. I keep wondering why I am bothering to clean and paint something nobody is going to ever see. But I will every time I change fluids!

Great work on the cab bottom. What's the next step? In answer to your question, yes, I went with the 23" double bend shifter.

Thanks PDX. Next step is another coat of primer, seam seal all the welds I did and then some 3M undercoating and flip her back upright and get started on the bodywork.

Re: 64 C10 Stepside "Jaybird"

Wow...just read through your entire thread...that is pretty much what I want to do. My Dad gave me a 64 when I was 15ish...we worked on it a few years together and had it in pretty good shape...not show truck quality but daily drive worthy...long story short...I had an accident about 6 weeks after we had it out of the body shop...my Dad was overseas at the time and never got to see it finished. I joined the Navy soon after that and the truck sat in the drive for a few years...he wound up giving it away to a neighbor's kid who only kept it a few years and sold it. Trying to see if I can find it or another like it so I can restore it. My Dad passed away in Nov 2012 so I'll be doing this one on my own..maybe my son will help me.....

Anyway...love what you have done and look forward to contributing here as well in the future.

Re: 64 C10 Stepside "Jaybird"

This morning I installed the new cabinets I have been working on for the shop. I made these from some recycled plywood cabinets I got for free from work. Just had to buy hinges and handles. Hung some pegboard underneath for some tool organization.

After lunch shot another coat of primer on the cab and then seam sealed. Then some undercoating.

I used 3M Professional Rubberized undercoating. This stuff laid down awesome and had a great texture. I used 3 cans. Going to buy two more to make sure it is nice and thick.

On the way home a neighbor that is moving had some free stuff on the driveway. Scored a bunch of wood and a decent scissor jack.

Re: 64 C10 Stepside "Jaybird"

A few small updates.

Got a 2nd and 3rd coat of undercoating on the bottom of cab.

I cut out some rust above the driver side windshield and welded in new metal.

Stripped the roof down to metal. Still have a few place of rust that are being stubborn. May just chemically treat it.

Managed to pull out the 2 big dents in the rear shelf part of the roof. They were oil canning bad so I used a combination of heat from a MAPP torch and stud gun to pull them out. They are not perfect but much better than before and won't require 1/4" thick filler. Pulled out a bunch of smaller dents. The HF stud gun worked great!

Stripped the door jambs while it was on its back.

Flipped it back upright with the help of my wife and MIL and started working on the firewall. I welded up the clutch hole. Still need to weld up a few more holes. I think there is one that is used for reverse lights and the manual choke. Don't need those.

The driver side firewall panel was loose it came from the factory that way they missed the part behind with the spot welder they were to far down. I drilled some holes and welded it all back together.

Then I ran some filler on all the spot welds. I have always wanted to smooth a firewall.

Hope to get it in primer soon.

Re: 64 C10 Stepside "Jaybird"

Thanks guys. Yes Rian it is slowly moving along. I have a vacation coming soon in the next month so I hope to get a lot done during that time.

I worked on the firewall some more got it in primer and started finishing on the inside.

I am enjoying bodywork and painting. Its a nice break from rust repair, welding and grinding.

Re: 64 C10 Stepside "Jaybird"

Sorry T.J. Today's work got rid of all the shiny metal.

The inside of the cab is almost ready for paint. Just need to fix the radio hack in the dash and weld the gas tank brackets back in.

A shot of what my floor looked like after I cleaned the bed liner and fiberglass patches covering all the holes. If I remember correctly I welded up like 35+ holes.

A shot of the windshield area before

Great work....man, you guys have so much more clearance than our knee-knocker cabs. Sure helps when laying down primer and paint.

Funny you should say that I had a hell of a time painting the roof. Its going to be a pain to get a smooth even color coat on it.
