It is a lot easier if you'll go to a 16" or 16.5" rim.

Re: 37 inch tires 15 inch rim

I was going to suggest these toyo open country mt's as well or I think BFGoodrich might make a 37" tire. Swampers are great just aggressive and loud especially on a truck that is a daily driver and driven on the street a lot, plus the tires are going to wear faster.

Re: 37 inch tires 15 inch rim

go to 16.5 and run surplus HMMWV tires. They can be had pretty cheap, depending on where you look. I have 16.5 Centerlines, and I considered them, but don't want to lift the Burban anymore or have to cut fenders/wheelwells.

Here is a pic of 16.5s with 37 hummer tires. don't know if it is the big tire/small rim look that you want, but you can see how it looks.

Re: 37 inch tires 15 inch rim

15's don't allow you the opportunity to easily upgrade your axles if you decide you want to do that at some point to 8 luggers.

Nates pic is of the 36" bias ply Humvee tires, same as I have on my Jimmy with 16.5 Centerlines. They are exactly the same height as my 35" 12.5 15 BFG's that I had on it. The 37" Humvee radial is truly a 37" tire, so 4" lift is probably not enough without trimming and/or moving front axle forward and centering the rear. BUT... Tread Wright sells a rockin' looking re-tread Humvee tire and they are only $145 each.

Re: 37 inch tires 15 inch rim

i had mickey t 38x15.50 4 15's.
if your runnin 15 in rim you probably are running too small of axles to handle anythin past 35's.

i sold my 38's, ditched the axles.. went with 37's and 14bolts (check sig)
ut if your interested i have a extra 38 brand new garage kept that the buyer diddnt ever pick up. moutned on a 15 in 5 hole rim. prolly cut you a helllll of a deal on it...

Re: 37 inch tires 15 inch rim

and i'll also jump in.
my 14 bolt rear will not clear 15in rims unless i have a different cut center. those centers make it a total pain to mount the tires. The front calipers need to be ground down also on any3/4 -1 ton axle to clear a 15 in tire. 16's on anything past a 35 inch tires is preferred and almost mandatory.

Re: 37 inch tires 15 inch rim

I've had a crapload of 14ff's, all of them cleared 15" rims. What rear do you have??

I had a set of 40" boggers that road smooth down the road. Lower speeds is where they wander and jump around. And sounded sweet, like an old WWII bomber coming down the road. Man I kick myself for selling them....

There's more to it than just a "15" wheel will or won't clear a 1 ton axle..." Shallow backspacing like what ghettoluxury posted definitely helps, pushing the hoop of the wheel out past the point of interference (drum/caliper). Deeper backspaced wheels are where you start getting into 15s that will not clear a 14ff or D60 brakes. The front can usually be fixed with grinding, but the rear is a lost cause without different backspacing. Also usually only steel 15" wheels have a chance to clear, I can't say that I have ever seen an aluminum 8 lug 15" wheel, the material would be too thick and definitely would not clear.

Re: 37 inch tires 15 inch rim

It's been a while, but the 15s I have have at least 4" b/s. The rear is from a 1 ton van, has the huge breaks, and it's close but they clear. I had a set with 4.25" on a 1 ton rear, still cleared. Only issues I've ever had with 15s is clearing a 3/4 front and a 1 ton, but grinding takes care of that.

15" rims have more tire options not to mention cheaper. If you need more capacity, then might have to go with 16s or bigger. But IMO, bigger doesn't always look better, especially on the 70s/80s trucks.

4.25" is the max you can run on 15s for the 14ff with the old style press on drums, the later model slip ons need like 3" or less backspacing or grind the fins off IIRC.

Re: 37 inch tires 15 inch rim

I didn't say it couldn't be done, just not easily. Eaton is one of the 15" 8 lug wheel makers. In my reading about 15" wheels for 8 lug axles, most require that you grind down on the caliper and you have to stick the wheel way out to clear brake drums. Your choice, but that is not an area I would consider weakening and I am not a fan of bearing burner rims.

The 15" 8 lug wheels came about so you could run wheels with the safety bead rather than 16.5. Now that you have a TON of options in 16" and 17" rims, I wouldn't do the 8 lug 15" rim thing.

With that said, I have a '76 Blazer, and '83 3/4 ton Suburban, and a set of pretty decent 35 12.5 15 BFG MT's that I have considered marrying.... but it would be strictly off road.

Re: 37 inch tires 15 inch rim

Did you ever price tires/wheels between 15" bigger?? I want a set of 35s for my crew for daily driving and winter tires. 40" swampers won't last long and suck on snowy/icy roads. I went to Summit, did some comparison shopping. Just looking for the cheapest of each,

15" wheel, $45, 35" tire, $206
16" $68 $225
17" $76 $245

That's one tire, one wheel. Add four of each, that's a pretty good difference in price. Didn't even look at 16.5s, they are slowly becoming obsolete.

Re: 37 inch tires 15 inch rim

16.5's are quickly becoming obsolete, no argument. And for me it was price, too. Found complete '86 3/4 ton Sub for $300 with 4.10 gears. Found (5) brand new Goodyear Wrangler RTII for $550 including shipping. Found (5) clearance Chrome Centerline Bullet rims for $145 apiece ($725). I turned the rear drums and added new shoes, put new rotors on the front. So I did a complete 3/4 ton axle swap (albeit with the "wimpy" 9.5" 14) for $1750 with 36" tires, 4.10 gears with a Gov-bomb in the back and a full boat of billet rims. And I have a matching spare tire and wheel.

I wish I had thought out what I was going to do to the truck long term when I did these sort of first mods 20 years ago.

After having broke more 12 bolts than I can count, I should have done this years ago and the job would have been almost free! Especially if it was how I had originally swapped to 4.10 rather than buying gears and paying to get them setup. But hey, without all that experience with exploding 12 bolts I wouldn't have all the diff setup experience I have now.
