Bear Claw latches

For those of you using Bear Claws, what size works better, large of small? Also did you use the install kit along with it?

Justin,
Do the ones you sell have locks? I want to run the stock door handles at least on the outside.I would also like to be able to lock the doors from the outside.

make sure you use the doubles. I have singles and it sucks cause as the door latches it pulls it down. So they are hard to align.

large ones, trique now makes an exact replacement door latch, u can use your inside an outside door handles an locks, it was a little pricey i think 350 if i remember rite, but god what a diffrence, u want regret it, o that was for a 1949 ad

I've been wondering this myself. Not trying to hyjack the thread but was also wondering where a good place is to get these with the install kit. I'm a good ways from needing a set but it would be nice to have all my ducks in a row before I get to that point. Thanks in advance.

I got mine on ebay and they are the large double claws. I bought them with the installation kit.

Other than the bolt in bear claws, I have yet to find any that will work with the OE door handle without major modifications. I want to used the push button handle on my 52 and not door poppers. I've been looking at the bolt-in bear claw latches but they are $350 vs. the $20. for the universal units.

After wasting way too much time trying to figure out how to use the turn down handles with the autoloc small ones, I scrapped the plan, welded my doors back up similar to original and went with the Trique bolt in ones. If I wasn't using the original handles it would have been easy, as stated above. I may have even tried to use OEM locks off something with the power solenoids and everything if I wasn't dead set on using the stock door handles. So yes, I went the $350 route, but it's done now.

Wanted to get the Trique units but they're not in the budget right now. Just got a set of large bearclaws with dual jaws with the install kit on Ebay for $45. Plans for now are to shave the door handles.

I looked at those as well but was wondering if there were provisions for the exterior door locks. Decided to shave the handles and forget about it. If someone knows for sure how to make it the stock lock work I'd reconsider.

I have the same problem. But I will not shave anything, so If I had a bear claw latch here I could most likely make it work. if not there has to be something that we can adapt that gives us what we want.

I'm using the Trique kit on my 55 and it says right in the package that the handle push locks will not work with their kit. I do find that a huge annoyance and am trying to engineer a solenoid locking system to do the job. The biggest hinderance is devising a mechanical safety unlock in the event of a power failure. I always wondered why some guys put the locking mechanism on the cab and the pin on the door(backwards).....now I know why. It would be way easier to do the solenoid mount and adjusting as well as the mechanical safety on the stationary post as opposed to the moving door. On the up side, they are easy to install and look good and they do integrate well with the stock handles, at least on the mock-up assembly. I ordered new exterior handles with locks keyed the same to solve the exterior problem and I think I've figured out the keyless entry thing to my satisfaction but it will be a couple of months before final assembly and real testing. I'm actually glad someone is having trouble with/questioning the stock lock system because I've spent numerous days saying bad words and wondering why I didn't just buy new stock stuff and leave well enough alone.

after weighing my options and deciding i realy wanted my stock handles i also bought a set of bolt ins from trique....what i still dont like is the fact you cant lock your doors from the inside..and since my 49 only has a passenger side door lock,i'm gonna get a second lock and have them keyed alike and install it on the drivers door....the guys at Trique said it will work fine... also if anybody on here is a HAMB alliance member also trique gives an alliance discount.........whid

I found this kit for 55.5s+, not cheep, but can be installed even if the truck is painted.

i will be trein to figure out a way to put electric door looks cause u can lock the truck if your inside r leavin the truck parked so that seems to be a simple fix, i hope. if any body has done this an has pics please post

an also if u take the door mechanism off an cut the top mount hole off an mount it upside down the door rod will fit the groove that chevrolet made to start with an it will work 100 percent better. so think ahead an when u cut the hole for the rod to come out of, do it a little lower an it will lay perfect in that groove, u will have no probs with your door panels

I finally have everything hooked up and woorking the way I want it to. I ended up using a Bull Dog kit from Autozone to pop the doors. No door poppers needed with the Bearclaws. It may not be the prettiest install but I'm happy.

Got mine in the other day. Rethinking shaving the handles. I've got it figured out in my head how to use the stock door handles and outside locks on both doors.

Decided to go ahead and shave the handles. Got the latches installed and just have to go back and smooth things up a bit.
