considering selling my 68 and getting a k5... your thoughts?

I have been racking my brain and I just want a little input. I have my 68, converted to a shortbed, lowered, disk brakes, nice motor 200r4 Yada yada . But I never really get to drive it that much because I have 2 small children and no room for the family. I also wont likely have money to really make it a show truck, and I'm not so sure I would want it to be one because then I would never drive it. So it basically sits.

I was thinking of getting a 70-75 k5. I can fit all the family, and do a little off roading , pop the top and cruise it around etc. Then maybe I wouldn't care so much how it looked as much as the fun factor.... your thoughts?

Keep your 68 and get something else to roll the family in. A K5 rides like a tank and your kids and wife will probably not enjoy it. Just my opinion.

Re: considering selling my 68 and getting a k5... your thoughts?

I understand your position, and I'd agree that's a tough choice. If you have the means, adding a K5 to your stable would be the ideal situation. If your only option is one or the other, it'd probably be best to discuss it with your wife.

Maybe you have a friend that owns a K5 that wouldn't mind you hauling your family around for a trip or two? It would really be unfortunate to swap vehicles only to have your family not warm up to the new ride.

I wish you all the best with your decision! Good luck!

Got an offer from my wife's little brother (26) but I don't know how I feel about seeing him drive it all the time. Cars are like girlfriends, once your done with them, you want them out of your life so you don't have to see em all the time.

Re: considering selling my 68 and getting a k5... your thoughts?

At one time or another I've owned almost every model of Chevy or GMC light truck made between 1960 and 1980. I eventually sold all of them. The last one I bought is a 72 K5 Blazer. I will never sell the Blazer. It's so much more fun than any of my trucks. My wife loves to go cruising in it with me on summer evenings and my kids all love it as well. My wife never liked any of my other trucks too much.

I also own a 95 Z28 convertible, and I love the Z, but if I had to sell one, the Blazer would stay.

Go for it, nothing cooler than a K5. But, I would limit the search to 73 or older. In 74, not a full convertible any longer.

71-72 is my favorite k/5, disks up front and I personally like the 71/72 front end the most. Sounds like a cool plan to me!

You probably wont be disappointed with a Blazer. I bought ours about 14 years ago, and it is by far the favorite vehicle. My wife loves it, daughter loves it and my son drove it to his Senior Prom. We have had a few old pickups and no one wants to get rid of the Blazer.

If you put a soft top on it, you will get a lot more good out if it. Just hop out and pull the top on when it rains.

If you can't have but one, I would be getting a K5 Blazer so I could have the whole family cruising with me. It's the memories that the kids and you will always have. You can't get that time back with them.

I say sell the truck and get the family cruising.

Re: considering selling my 68 and getting a k5... your thoughts?

I bought a k5 when I sold my 72 c10 my wife actually picked it out she loved it. It was huge tho it had 37s and when she was pregnant she couldn't get in it so I unfortunately sold it. They are awesome yes rough but still so cool. I wanted one when I bought my current truck but couldn't find the right one

I agree.

The kids are gone way too soon. Gotta make those memories while you can. You can always get another truck later. Not like there will be any shortage later.

Re: considering selling my 68 and getting a k5... your thoughts?

Well, I have the best of both worlds. I bought a '68 C/10 Stepside in 1973, and in 1995 I grabbed a '71 GMC Jimmy. For sentimental reasons I could not ever part with the Orange Stepside, but the Jimmy sure is fun to drive too!
They each have their strongpoints. I would be hard pressed to part with the Jimmy.

Hey - If a Blazer is a K/5, how come the GMC Jimmy isn't a "K/750"?

Do you think you will have enough coin for a decent K5 once you sell your truck?

Re: considering selling my 68 and getting a k5... your thoughts?

as much as I love the 68 shorties, buying a Blazer will allow you to enjoy the hobby with your family. I've had to sell a lot of things for family-you won't be disappointed until your older (50+) and every time you see a 68 you'll say I had one of those and never should of sold it....lol

Yes, get the K-5.... Post this question in the 4x4 forum for further reinforcement on the simple fact that.... 4x4s are better. I mean, if your gonna go short.... then you also need to go to the sand!

Here's the k5, and it doesn't ride like a tank. Like how some think.

Lol, yes they do Short wheel base and leaf springs give a bone jarring ride no matter what spin you put on it. Now you may not really care or it may not bother you, but it still does and it is something to consider if your whole plan is to get the wife and kids to ride along. I've owned plenty of Jeeps and four wheel drive trucks and it doesn't bother me. I'm speaking from experience here.

Re: considering selling my 68 and getting a k5... your thoughts?

My c10 rode rougher than my blazer, and it had all new ECE components front and rear. My wife and kids haven't ever complained about the k5's ride. To each there own. K5's are cool and more versatile. N1udknow have u considered maybe a 2wd blazer? That would be best of both worlds!

My last truck before the Blazer was a C20 long bed. The Blazer rides MUCH better than the C20 did.

My C10 long bed rides WAY smoother than any Blazer I've owned.
