power steering pump

Can anyone tell me if there is a power steering pump for a 1968 small block?

I purchased one from a local parts store and I had asked for the short water pump but it must not have been an option.

The pump is on and working but I had to shim out the bell shaped crank pulley about 1/2"- 3/4" so that it would line up and I am concerned about the sparers and bolts holding up over the long run.

With the current configuration this pulley would not line up with any of the other pullys.

Let me add to the confusion. LOL
Here is a pic of three different pulley configs out there. If your motor pullies are mixed matched you will play he!! figuring the combinations.

Re: power steering pump

That brings up another question. Where can I get the bell shaped pulley? This would bring it back in line with the others.

Anyone know if that was a specific year that called for the bell shaped pulley?

Re: power steering pump

I have 7 of these pumps.Just went down to the shop to look at them.
To start,my original 68 Chevy truck with 327 has the pump that measures 1-7/8" from the rear edge of the pulley flange to the seam on the pump.It has a 3 groove pulley on the crank. The pump is driven by the outermost pulley only. Not the water pump. This pump uses the stamped steel mount.
The other pumps I have measure 1-1/2" from the rear edge of the pulley flange to the seam on the pump.they have a bell shaped pulley on them.
I have another that has a double pulley on it.It measures 3/4" from the rear edge of the pulley flange to the seam on the pump.I don't know what it came from.
Hope some of this helps.
Mike.

Re: power steering pump

I had the same problem as all of you. It was suggested that i get all the brackets, pulleys, pumps etc from one truck.
Seeing I had everything powder coated I wasn't just going to give up for a simple pulley. I spent countless hours on the internet searching and I found this guy. He actually knew how to measure things unlike all the others I've talked to.

Here's his reply to an email I sent to him.... "all chevy keyed pulleys are either 5 3/4 [#325] to 5 15/16 od. setting the pulley on the nut surface and measuring to the cl of the v--#325-1 1/2"[$15.00] #457-15/16 [$35.00] #509-1 1/8 [$30.00] AND #537-5/8 [$35.00]. THESE ARE ALL EARLY SM. AND BB. PULLEYS AND I HAVE HAVE THEM ALL IN STOCK. the reason i measured from the front of the nut surface to the cl of the v is it`s the most accurate way. all 4 pulleys had 2/3 diff. manufactures and were not held to the height of the outside lip which varried from 1 mam. to the other. hope this helps. "

Here's his email. bigblockjim454@cox.net

I think he has the crank pulleys too.

Re: power steering pump

Heres how I measured what I needed.
I used the square on the crank pulley and I would swing it back and forth. I was able to determine what was center. Then I scribed that mark on both sides of the square on the PS pump, then marked the center of those two lines. (that represents the v belt center). Next I removed the pump and Installed the pulley I had, then used a small 6in, 100th in increments scale to measure from the flat area of the pulley to the scribe mark.
I was within .020 of his measurements on one of his pulleys!
It's on and looks great!

Re: power steering pump

Sometimes you can buy the bare pump and put your can on it. Of course the pump shaft is meaningful, but the cans vary much more. If you go this route a seal kit is needed, but its $15 or so.

I spent days on this nightmare... Buy part, fit (not), take back, etc...

Re: power steering pump

I don't think the can is there problem, but the pump's are available without the reservoirs.
