Swapping over to a stock 283 in my 66....

Any picts/descriptions of spark plug wire routing with ram horns? Seen quite a few 327 pictures but not sure the 283 has the same block holes for bolts in the back to mount the plug wire loom dividers. Seems like I'll need really long wires to go back and under, with 1/3 and 2/4 being routed up through the engine mounts. The back near the firewall is getting pretty busy and need to get them out of the way of the throttle rod/lever. Maybe put a couple of 4 wire holders on the firewall to get them out of the way and started down and forward? Some oil pan bolt clips? Use some longer pre '74 Corvette wires (or just make my own)...

283 and 327 with ram's horn manifolds both used the same spark plug wire routing and brackets.

Here is a diagram from the 67-72 assembly manual:

The 1966 spark plug wire routing is nearly identical. The only difference is the style of retainer bracket used at the driver side rear (item #17 on the diagram).

Wow, this is perfect, I may not be able to find all those holders, but I can sure fabricate them to match! Not sure the back of my block has those two bolts, much less be able to get to them, I have some blind groping around from below the engine in my future....

Thanks!

Re: Swapping over to a stock 283 in my 66....

You're welcome! I think the majority of the plug wire holders are being reproduced. Chevy cars used many of the same holders. So if you can't find them through any of the pickup truck parts vendors, check with places that sell reproduction parts for 60's Chevy cars.

I believe all of the 283 & 327 blocks will have the necessary holes. You're right, the ones on the back of the block down by the bellhousing probably won't be easy to reach. And they might be full of crud if they haven't been used in some time. They accept bolts with 1/4"-20 threads if I remember correctly. Also, the clips at the very bottom of the illustration (without any reference numbers) go under the heads of the existing oil pan bolts (one on each side).

Yup, they're 1/4-20! Can actually see and get to them through the wheel arch (plus only the inner fenders are on at this point!) Time to hit the net for that one tall LH holder.....

Got the rear engine wire holders bolted in after removing the wheels and working in the wheel wells under the inner fenders...what a pain that was! So is it fact that a set of 7mm pre 1974 Corvette wires will all be long enough to enable this plug wire routing setup? Or will any good set for a 67-72 283/327 work?

Yup, I've put those back engine brackets on, have the oil pan clips, but I'll need to fab up the rear drivers side intake manifold bracket to raise the wires up to clear the throttle linkage. And yes, that eBay bracket is what I'll have to make, mainly for the price THAT ones going for! Good looking engine, be glad you thought about this routing before putting it in, DOH! Looking at most reviews from folks who bought early (66-68) 283 plug wires, it seems like most folks complain about them being too long and had to shorten them, I assume they are not routing them the original correct way back/around and under ram horns...

Yeah, that eBay bracket is a bit on the pricey side. And as I mentioned earlier, the diagram I posted is for 67+ and that particular bracket is different for the earlier years anyway.

This is the style that was commonly used on early/mid 60's Chevy car applications with small block V8's --> http://www.show-cars.com/cgi-bin/com...ction&key=5328 It attaches under one of the valve cover bolts.

The bracket originally used on these trucks is quite similar except it's bent a little different at the bottom so it attaches to an intake manifold bolt instead of a valve cover bolt.

Also, here is the upper / rear bracket used on the passenger side (this one is the same for car & truck applications) --> http://www.show-cars.com/cgi-bin/com...ction&key=5326 It attaches via the rear intake manifold bolt on that side. Some applications with automatic transmissions did not use this bracket ... instead they had one spot welded to the trans dipstick tube.

Re: Swapping over to a stock 283 in my 66....

Shouldn't be too hard to fab up a part to bolt to the last 2 intake bolts on the rear drivers side, I have enough ebay pictures to cobble one together and free up my throttle linkage...your diagram was a huge help, as is your dash gauges from warning lights web page!
