My vss np205 score

Well to all the nay sayers who said it was impossible to find and that you had to have deep pockets to get it if you could even find one, I ended up finding my VSS np205. Well actually this is what I scored. I have 500 in the t-case setup, and 300 for both axles ( that's what he wanted ). Everything else he threw in for free.

All from a 91 V3500 srw crew cab.

4l80e/np205 combo with shifter assy. "the elusive holy grail"
Dana 60 front
14 bolt rear with posi
Front sway bar with d60 spring plates
Front drive shaft
Factory trans/t-case crossmember with skid plate

Nice score!

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who has been lucky finding the good stuff. I expect my luck will run out eventually.

Re: My vss np205 score

Not saying that it's impossible to find, but even in my neck of the woods where 90% of the trucks are 4wd, I've NEVER found on in a yard. I've only seen a couple for sale. That's a great score tho, congrats!!!!

Re: My vss np205 score

I just put that combo in my 79 dually, I threw together a build thread if you are interested as I couldn't find a decent start to finish build online. I documented most of the swap and the electronics were simple.

Congrats on the find and I hope your install goes as smooth as mine.

Re: My vss np205 score

Thanks guys! I was super pumped. The swap should be to pretty decent. It's going in a 91 3500 crew 2wd, 454, 4l80e/gear vendors OD. Just couldn't find a nice rust free 4wd crew that wasn't all beat up. That's why I was looking for the 91' only stuff. Just didn't think I'd get all of it in one shot for that price.

Re: My vss np205 score

Those great deals are out there you just have to be patient. I looked for 5 years for a frame for my Blazer and nothing was available and shipping was crazy expensive. So one morning I go C/L and there it is. 2wd conversion started rolling Blazer frame. $175.00. I did not even try to haggle as he said he could bring it right over in 30 minutes. GTFO! Got the wheels on my avatar for $400 delivered too. Brand new rubber!

What makes these particular 205's '91 only? The one I've got has a date on the tag 1/20/90, so I'm assuming it could have come out of a '91 truck.

Re: My vss np205 score

91 was the only year that GM put VSS on a 205. The 4l80 came out that year which is a fully electronic tranny. It won't shift out of first gear inless the VSS is hooked up, or using a manual v/b. They are only in the old body style trucks, 81-up style, 1 tons only. Usually crew cabs, but cab/chassis got it as well.
