Manual steering gear box for 64 C10?

Hey all,

My steering has a bit too much slack in it for my liking. I'm going to replace the gear box and pitman arm. I found a pitman arm from the local Autozone, but I can't find a replacement gear box. I checked Oreilly's, Autozone, and CPP.

Do you guys have an online source that sells these? Or, is there another year that bolts right up that I could search for?

Have not adjusted. Just felt leery of doing so, with all the stories about it locking up after adjusting it.

Great. I've bookmarked that website, thank you.

I get the sense that not many people replace this part, and just go for a power steering set up instead. Not really an option in my case.

I don't know. I'll try and research and find out. Maybe someone will chime in that knows.

I searched on classic parts and didn't find one. I just searched and Rockauto does have it. Thanks for the tip.

I looked at the part #'s on Rockauto's website and it suggests a different part #, and the photo looks different. Thanks anyway.

Just a what if but if you are thinking at all that you would rather have PS now could be the opportunity to do so.

Advance Auto has it here. Not cheap, but you can get an extra 20% off if you use the coupon code P20.

I tightened my gearbox. Just enough to get a lot of the play out but leave some in. World of difference. No locking issues at all.

Re: Manual steering gear box for 64 C10?

Thanks for all the info guys. I'm going to try tightening it a bit and see how that does, then go from there. Now I've got a couple sources to buy from if need be. Thanks again.

I had mine rebuilt at Benchmark Steering out of Phoenix or maybe Scottsdale Arizona. Like brand new!

Redhead Steering Gears is top notch. I got my box from them and they do a lot of custom stuff to a standard rebuild that you won't find in your local auto parts store steering box. Plus it's a nice drive up to Seattle from were your at or you can get it shipped.

Re: Manual steering gear box for 64 C10?

I could not find an exact replacement so I followed the advice here and had it rebuilt at a local shop, I gave it to them with the pitman arm attached so I didn't ruin it, turned out great and had a year warranty,

It makes me cringe to see the solid steering shaft still there. I know a guy that was killed many years ago when that shaft went through his chest.

Re: Manual steering gear box for 64 C10?

RockAuto has them...

ACDELCO Part # 36G0013 (for '68 to '86 with manual steering)
LARES Part # 854 (for '67-'69 with manual steering)
LARES Part # 8010 (for '60-'66)

I know of quite a few that have used the later gears without issue. I am not sure what the differences are in the later model gears...

I ended up adjusting it to see it it'd tighten up without binding. Worked wonderfully. It's a night and day difference, and so far no binding. It's no power steering, but it darn near took all the play out.

Re: Manual steering gear box for 64 C10?

I saw this thread as I was looking for a source for the manual steering gearbox for my '65 C-10 and have a question:

In an earlier post, Aggie91 says that this part fits my truck:

ACDELCO Part # 36G0013 (for '68 to '86 with manual steering)

I can get one from O'Reilly's (house brand) with a lifetime warranty by telling them I am looking for one that fits a 1986 1/2-ton pickup.

Does anyone know if this actually fits, or does it have to be modified to work?

What about the steering ratio? Our trucks have big steering wheels, and I don't recall the later ones having ones as big. Would the gearing be the same for the 86 as he 65?

Thanks for your help!

No, that box will not fit without mods. Why would you not just buy the correct 60-66 box to begin with?

Is there a way to add a collapsable D-shaft and still keep the stock box and column.?
