Thumbs up Re: 64 C10 Stepside "Jaybird"

I just caught your thread while looking for a project like mine and thought I would mention a couple things, late as they ma be, one is parks; I opted for disk in front for safety reasons and they are not that hard to install and the other is the four bar trailing arms which will allow you to install your fuel cel behind the cab inside the frame, here again safety, assuming this not a restoration. Looks real good

Thank you. I do plan on disc brakes in the future. The 4 link not interested in. I like the factory setup and I will be running the gas tank in the cab as it was meant to be. It is one of the charms of these old trucks. I have fond memories of the gas sloshing around when I rode around with my grandpa. Now if I go LSX someday it may have to come out but for now it is staying in the cab. Again thank you.

I got both a-pillars, kick panels and rocker panels all welded in. I'm pretty happy with how they came out. Not professional by any means but what is ugly will either be hidden or metal bondo to make it presentable.

With all that done I flipped the cab on its back so I could start cleaning the bottom and firewall and repaint and undercoat everything.

I also got some new toys that have made this so much easier and cooler.

Rockers came out great, better than some of the professionals i've seen. The rolling frame look awesome, nice work, I am also using your pegboard idea to paint the nuts and bolts for the engine, Thanks for the ideas!

Those chassis photos look great. Remind me of the old Renwal chassis models that joined together with a Visible V8!

Its funny you say that when I was putting the frame back together I told my mom all those model cars I built as a kid paid off in the long run. She had a laugh.

Thank You I assume you are talking about the rust on the cab pillars. I am using Loctite Rust inhibitor. It turns all the rust to a hard black coating and is suppose to stop it.

I love the fan. It is belt driven so its not that loud and it moves a ton of air. 13,400 cfm on high. I haven't even used high yet. My Mother in Law bought it for me from Lowes. I think it was $299. Worth every penny in my opinion and it will make it bearable to work through this month and next month during what I call "winter months" here in Texas. So damn hot you can't walk to the car without sweating.

Yah and in any other void that may not be reachable, I'm thinking of the space between the head liner and the cab roof. It has been my experience that area is notorious for rusting from the inside out. Whin I was in the Navy we used rust converter/inhibiter that I have not been able to lay hands on for years, glad to see you found some, how much was it? I need some for that headliner cavity. keep 'em coming.

hey bj383ss is this what u are using for blast media. I bought a sand blaster from harbor freight and the sand I bought a home depot quickly plugged the nozzle and do you sift it before you put it in the hopper. It seems like you have the blasting thing figured out.
Thanks

Re: 64 C10 Stepside "Jaybird"

I ordered a replacement rocker for the pass side as I have a oem rocker for the driver side. Also ordered the full length inner which covers from the toe board to the cab corner. My upper inner rocker is solid, but the lower inner (under the cab) looks bad to say the least. Also ordered cab supports for the driver side. The pass side mounts look good. I have new rubber cab bushings to install when I get to that point. Goal this weekend is engine and trans set in place.

Yes I do sift it twice before I use it. It has a lot of bigger pieces that will clog the nozzle all day long. I have a sifter I made from two pieces of plywood with a piece of window screen sandwiched between them. I made it to fit on top of a 5 gallon bucket. I'll take some pictures of it when I go back out there next for you.

Sounds good man. So where your A & B pillars ok then? I would guess if your cab supports were bad the a pillar would be too. Look forward to seeing your progress.

Re: 64 C10 Stepside "Jaybird"

Todays work. Got the bottom of the cab stripped. What a nasty and PITA job! Glad its done. I a few holes to weld up and then primer and undercoat.

I spent about 30 minutes blowing air into the various holes on the rear cab supports. A ton of dirt and rocks and all kinds of stuff came out. It was unbelievable. I should have take a picture of the floor when I got done. No wonder the supports rust out. I even found one of those red straws that goes on the a can of WD40.

Re: 64 C10 Stepside "Jaybird"

Shot some primer on it this morning. It dried to fast on me so will have too shoot another coat and then some undercoating.

Ta2don I used your idea with the nails on three holes I had left. Worked perfectly. Thanks for the tip.

The Texas heat is starting to kick in so after lunch worked out in the woodshop making some new cabinets for the big garage.

One down 7 more to go.

Still need to make a shelf for it.

Parts cut for 3 more.

Re: 64 C10 Stepside "Jaybird"

Looks like just the very bottom of the driver side a piller will need work. I'll really know more once I take the outer rocker off. Was looking at it again from under the truck when grinding crossmember rivets sunday......my total will be:

Driver side: inner/outer rocker, small piece of toe board not covered by full length inner rocker (which also takes care of cab corner), both cab supports and lower a piller.

Pass side: outer rocker and forward cab support, small floor work, but won't need a whole panel, just 2-3 small places.
