I won't have any good ones until it's done being rebuilt. Who knows when that'll be!

Re: 67 C10, Greentruck From the Greenhouse

Great Project!
I like nothing better than to drag something out of where it's been setting for 20+ years and getting it running again!

I'm looking forward to seeing more.

Re: 67 C10, Greentruck From the Greenhouse

I have progress pictures but not many more of the outside. Its been in the garage all summer while I did all this work. It goes slow because usually the only time I usually get to work on it is Friday nights when my friends come over to help. The gearhead version of poker night. Sometimes a late during a week night if parts come in the mail that day

So, on that note, the front brakes were next. I got new drums too but everyone knows what those look like. The grease in the bearings looked ok for now. Ill repack them soon after I get it on the road, assuming all goes well.

Then the wheels. Three of them were really, really rusty and wouldn't hold air for a day. It took a few days to clean them up with a wire wheel on an electric drill. It was really hot those days and I remember using the air from the drill to keep my face cool, haha.

Before:

After:

And they are still holding air today! But right after I got the tires disaster struck! I'll tell you about it later because its getting late

Re: 67 C10, Greentruck From the Greenhouse

It has nothing to do with the cowl cover, hehe. I had just taken it off to clean out the mouse poo and leaves that had collected over the years so that it wouldn't rust under there. What DID happen was pretty bad. The day started off pretty well, the engine was running and I had tires on it that would hold air. I had removed all the front brake lines in anticipation for that night when my friends were coming over since we were going to replace them. Since I am impatient, I drove the truck on its maiden voyage that day with no brakes! Just some careful use of 1st and reverse, here is the video of it:

I didn't die! I lost the mount to my tripod so my camera fell off the dash where it was sitting when I goosed it. What did happen you ask? Well, we got the new brakes lines installed, only on the front. After a few beers we realized this was a great time to do celebratory burnouts since the back brakes weren't working yet.

Big mistake! I should have known that there was something wrong when the rockers were wearing holes in the valve covers. There was also a tick that I just though was a collapsed lifter from sitting all those years. What it actually was was #1 exhaust valve stretching out and getting ready to fail. It failed mid burnout, didn't make ANY bad noises until the engine just stopped followed by billowing smoke from under the hood. Here is the result:

I found this piece of the valve stem in the y-pipe!

Needless to say I had to pull the engine to inspect the damage.

This is what I found.

The valve dropped and destroyed the piston and block. A couple people said me they haven't seen damage like that in a long time including my uncle who is a huge car guy like me. I swear this engine wasn't making the kind of noises to warn me of the kind of doom that was coming! After that I got kind of discouraged and didn't work on the truck for a few weeks until I found some new inspiration, which will be in the next update

Haha, there isn't much left until you guys are caught up anyway. One or 2 more posts probably.

So the truck just sat for a little while while I looked for an engine. Finally, that guy you see standing there in the burnout picture found another 283! It was right near me and only $150 so it was worth looking at. I get to the guys house and it turns out it was a guy I used to work with who is an awesome mechanic. He has a lift in his garage and everything. As soon as I found that out I knew I was coming home with that 283. Its a 57?-62 block, 63-67 truck heads and he put a 327/350hp cam in it. Had dual quads on it in his 55 Nomad and said it went pretty good.

First day home.

On the stand.

Cleaning up for new gaskets.

Resurfaced the flywheel.

Got some paint on it.

Then back in the truck. I traded an old Bolens plow for that quadrajet and intake. They came off my friends dads 67 Camaro.

More to come soon!

What a great find! I sure wish I could find one of these! To bad about the motor, but I'm exited to see how the rest goes.
