66 Hotrod Pro Touring
I am new to the site and this is my new project. I have always wanted to build a truck that is both old school hot rod and pro-touring. I have this picture of what I want the truck to look like in my head and now its time to make it happen.
 I want to get this build thread going even though I have already started the project. I will post the pictures of what I have complete already. Don't be fooled by the pictures it looks great from a distance. Driving my new ride home |

So I have been super busy buying parts. I want to get ahead on the big items. My goal is to go with a full front suspension upgrade, disk brakes, and steering so that I will be able to autocross the truck once I am finished. I also bought an LS truck motor and transmission to change out the tired old motor.

Looks like a great platform to start with! I kept a pro-touring vibe with my 66 and I gotta say that it makes for a great little driver! I'll be looking forward to updates

So after taking the truck down to my friend's shop I wanted to get the tear down started. My goal is to get all of the front-end fabrication complete first then work on the back. We pulled the engine and front clip to get a better look at what is going to be needed.

I am missing some pictures but the next step was getting the engine and trans mount installed. I bought the Headman LS headers for a 67 C10 LS swap. They fit great.

Next are the steering and control arms and airbag mounts. As a result of the new steering box and idler arm, the geometry of the steering is moved back some. This was causing us some issues where the center link would not fit..
 So some frame surgery was needed. The strange thing was that once we cut open the frame there was a HUGE pile of dirt inside the frame. It took awhile to clean out all the dirt before closing it up. |

Closing it up after cleaning it out and now trying to find a center link. The truck had power ram steering. The issue is it has brackets on the drag link and will just not work. I found a salvage yard that had one that was in really good shape. Moving on now to the brakes and dropped spindles.

Putting the 2 inch dropped CPP spindles and the Wilwood disk brakes on. This means that I am going to do a 5x5 conversion. The downside here is that I don't have any rollers that are 5x5 so it has to sit on the lift until I can find something cheap. I am sure you have seen that we replaced the upper and lower control arms with tubular ones from POL. This will allow us to check all the clearances before we have to take all back apart.

Still need to put the front clip back on to make sure that everything else is going to fit like the radiator and AC compressor will all fit. Now to pull the back off and work on the c-notch and dry fit the gas tank and air tank. While we were back there needed to test fit the new axels that are 5x5.

Welcome to the forum
 Sounds like an interesting build you have going on. You should not have had to notch the crossmember with a power steering conversion.

Thanks! I agree with you and I didn't think so either, but the geometry of the control arms, spindle and the mount points of the power steering just couldn't figure it out. I love the really close ratio it has now.

Just need to dry fit the new gas tank and the air tank. Also, we made some brackets for the air compressors to bolt onto the frame from the sides.

Front clip is back on and test fitting all of the AC parts and the checking the new wire harness from Howell's.

Once again breaking it all back down. The frame in the back is a little bent and once the cab is separated we are going to send it first over and have it straightened before haveing the frame powder coated.

Now all the body part are going to the media blaster so we can see what we have to work with. I will say that I am worried there are some places on the truck that I know have to be body filled.

Okay, the body is back and it looks like it dropped about a hundred pounds of Bondo. Wow, the front fenders are totally wasted and both sides of the bed are beaten to crap. At this point, I am just going to buy new fenders and both bed sides. The door rockers are rough and the driver side floor pan will need to be replaced. Time to get some parts on order.

Super excited is to see the frame is back and some of the other parts like the rear axle housing. The rear end as now all together and looks awesome. Wess did the break lines and they look great! Dropped the new gas tank in and run the new fuel lines with black anodized AN fittings. I still need to find some roller wheels so that we can get the frame all finished and roll it around the shop. I have a line on some new wheels via Craigslist off of a new jeep that has put big tires on and don't need the stock rims. The jeep ones are great because I needed a 16-inch rim minimum. The hub size is a little small but nothing that can't be fixed with a plasma cutter.

Engine clean up time. Clean the motor and transmission and paint the block to match the truck then get it back into the truck. I am looking at some different engine pullies but may wait to tell after SEMA to see what is new coming out.
