I am not familiar with those cranks, but i have seen some that are drilled to far and and break through to the inside and thus pick up and wick the oil out the bolts that way. Just a thought....

I always use blue loctite on flexplate/flywheel bolts anyhow so once it dries it acts like a sealer.

Re: Another frikken Volvo ?

Did not think about the seal edge direction. Put the new seal in and the seal portion is going out instead of in.
Do over ! such is life glad I caught it now before I put the engine back in.

Re: Another frikken Volvo ?

Well you've had a couple days to ponder. Any ides on the trans clearance? I think I'd go the route of lowering the cross member a smidget. Let me know when you want to goof with it some more. I need to make some time deposits in my labor trading account cause you know I'll have a big withdrawl coming up

Between mowing , mudding the sheetrock in the shop , cleaning tools.
I have not felt up for crawling under the Volvo. Have decided to try attacking the parts needing trimed on the tranny case after modding the LF mount like we talked.
if the engine/trans relationship with the diff all work out o.k. w/ shimming the rear mount down that sure would be better than opening up the trans tunnel.
I'll be in touch on the next planned assault !
Will take pics along the way to keep all the Volvo lovers here up to date.

Re: Another frikken Volvo ?

Dang its been over a month ! Time fly's when your having fun.

Pulled the engine tonight and cut off some trans ears and smoothed out some ribb's. Dented the headers a little. Massaged some clearance with
the 4lb sledge in the trans tunnel. Put the finishing touches on the motor mount brackets. The instructions called for lifting the bracket 3/8th ".
I did not like that idea so I played around with the drill press and grinders
till it worked the way I wanted it.

Had a productive evening.

Re: Another frikken Volvo ?

Its been a slow go! Took much of the summer off. Here it is November and I'm still just crawling The engine is back in, 3rd time is a charm right?
Most of the time I spend on this car is looking, thinking, scratching, not much has changed.
I did get some fuel lines mocked up on Saturday and brought them into a local hose shop(Williams oil filter in Tacoma) for them to copy and have the proper fittings installed to mate Volvo to Ford with some brass fittings in between.
Was cheap too, very surprised. Another year or two and this sucker will be done.

Brad and I have challenged each other to have our cars finished and ready to drive to Denver next June. I am doing the same swap and am about the same place he is. Waiting on the Red Rocks concert schedule to schedule a date.

Re: Another frikken Volvo ?

Thanks for the comments guys, Welcome Tom! (TestPoint)

June "the V8 Volvo nationals". LOL

Today I am thinking about how to attack the shift linkage. Another Volvo
Explorer swaper (who is way ahead of me) used a Mustang 3.8 cable.
Today I priced a new Ford cable, $273 dollars ! Uh NO ! Looks like I will try
my Hurst shifter cable thats for my Cutlass for length and go up or down as needed. Lots of universal cables or the wrecking yard.

I have shift linkage but it would be smack in the way of the speedo cable.
Hope to be back soon with progress pictures.

Re: Another frikken Volvo ?

Spent a few hours at the local pull a part and came home with $7.00 worth of coolant tubes/hoses to help me mate Ford to Volvo.
I think the Nissan pu tube is the winner.

Re: Another frikken Volvo ?

Still going at a snails pace. Today and yesterday the thermometer showed
28-29 degrees inside the shop. Got my hoses done.
was trying to not pull the engine/trans again (#4) but its coming back out.
Just not happy with the clearance. Now maybe I can use the linkage for the shifter instead of a cable?
Had spent some time cleaning and deburring the front pulley brackets.
Took the bumper off for more room to work the hoist and figured what the heck. I'll pull the filler panel below the grille also and get lots of room. No go! The thing unbolts near the headlights but what I didn't notice was its attached to the fenders! As in bonded somehow?
FRIKKEN VOLVO!

Re: Another frikken Volvo ?

#4 !
Was so much easier than all the time I have spent looking and thinking about how to get around pulling it again. Does suck doing the same thing over and over. I tweaked the heater core a bit, maybe I should check into that before I reinstall the engine. Could be worse.
Now its "Hammer time!" cue the music (MC Hammer)
Also thinking about cutting back the lower control arm rear mount and adding
some reinforcement that will help clear the exhaust pipe.
Since its out.

Re: Another frikken Volvo ?

Nice BFH collection I'd try to make the exhaust fit the car before doing the other way around, but if I read back through the thread you have probably done all you can there. If that's the case I say cut and reinforce as needed.

Re: Another frikken Volvo ?

Taking tonight off. Tired and beat. This weekend between many other things I did get a little bit done. Much is hard to see, like the extra clearance I beat into the trans tunnel. More to come? Need to do some measuring.
Also ground off a small amount on the tranny near the starter for more exhaust clearance as well as took off the rear A-arm mount bracket and sliced off the edge and beat it flat cut and welded it back up hit it with a quick shot of Hammerite paint and reinstalled. Pretty happy with how it came out. Had I spent a little more time it would have been great but good if fine since its never going to be seen.

Re: Another frikken Volvo ?

Forgot to mention, I used a part of one of my old truck mirrors on reinforcing the mount.(As seen in the vice above) Was the same thickness as the mount. What luck
I warmed the paint and the mount inside by the fire before I shot the paint on it. Didn't turn out so well as it was snowing as I went back to the shop and the part was likely plenty cold. Oh well.
