Suggestion for th350 detent cable that doesn't reach bracket on newly installed bbc

Son has wanted a big block in his truck for years, finally happening, been real pain locating all the pieces but it's moving under it's own power again, one of the last issues, and has been many is the detent cable outer does not make it to the bracket at the carb , tried routing it in front of distributor behind it just about 1-2 inches to short , now not sure what to measure they show a 40" cable and a 41.75 , is that outside or total length ? Info th350 with 74 454 air gap intake 750 brawler on top, wondering if the combo is the problem, intake and carb are definitely higher that the stock setup, any ideas would help
