Uncommon option K43 and Q20

I came across this C30 9 foot stepside for sale on the side of the road. An uncommon truck anyway, but the had a couple of SPID codes I hadn't seen before.

K43 - Poly-wrap air cleaner (I assume it's not the dyer hose induction system it's currently running)

Q20 - 6.00 x 2.00 Spare Wheel

Any examples of these options out there that are still in place?

Maybe it had 16" split wheels from the factory? 5" wide sure seems skinny for a 1T wheel, though.

Those stepside fender protectors are pretty cool, I would keep them if it was my truck. A white truck with black interior, I assume it was a fleet of some kind.

I have a truck with the K43 code, unfortunately the air cleaner and the rest of the engine are gone, though. What I could find indicated that it was some kind of replacement for the oil bath air cleaner, ie it was meant for dusty roads and conditions.

Yeah, I like that. All too often I'll give some bozos a short hop in the back bed, and even when I say ''Don't Step on the Fender'' when exiting, they will anyway. [See below]

The ''Poly Wrap Air Cleaner'' would be some kind of foam band that encircles the paper element for extreme dust environments. K&N sold a similar band for their air cleaners, too.

16 x 5 is not an unusual rim size for that period. My '68 C/10 Stepside specified 17.5 x 5.25 6-lug rims.

WTF is a ''Bulldog Transmission?'' SM465 maybe?

Yes, bulldog is referring to first gear in an SM465 or similar tranny with a very low first gear. A pretty common term in these parts.

It is in the Midwest as well. We always called it a granny low 4 speed. To me that told you it was a truck transmission as opposed to a car 4 speed.

Granny or creeper gear here, but I'd get it if someone said bulldog gear. I guess I also hear the grunt gear, or tractor gear, too. It was many years later and they started labeling the shift knobs as L-1-2-3 so people new to the truck world would know to not start out in granny all the time (is my guess). So now you get people calling 1st low and second 1st and there is confusion for some whether it's a 3spd or a 4spd. There are owner manuals. Why not just instruct to use 2nd to start out unless extra pull is needed and leave the shift patter labeling alone?

I learned that as "compound" low, as a kid. That seems to be more used with two gear boxes in one vehicle, though.

That motor is a late 70’s long water pump small block so who knows what else is changed in that engine compartment.

Seems from the vin that this truck started life as a straight 6 and SM465, since there is no RPO's for trans or engine. So it was probably a 250-6 and 4-spd.

A Saginaw 3-OTT would have gotten no mention on the SPID.
SM465 would be listed as M20.
