Hood and dooor gaps

I am going to look at a truck for a project tomorrow. You can see the hood and the driver door have irregular gaps. The seller says the frame is straight though.
Does anyone know what the cause could be if its not a bent frame? As long as the frame is straight and the door opens and shuts, I am most likely going to pick this one up.
I hope the picture uploaded.

Re: Hood and dooor gaps

The hood gaps is probably just worn or possibly mis-adjusted hood hinges, common issues.
Hard to say on door gaps. You are going to have to see that one in person. Could be a lot of different things.

Re: Hood and dooor gaps

Could be as simple as the door and hood not being properly aligned after a removal/installation. The PO may not have taken the time to get the alignment right. do you know if any of the panels were replaced with aftermarket ones? There are some fitment issues with a majority of the aftermarket panels/doors. I am going through this now in my build.

It just takes time and patience. It sometimes takes a bit of metal work as well.

Rusted cab mounts or worn cab bushings are something else that could cause issues also.

As far as the back of the hood sticking up here is a post by member "HUCK". He hasn't been on here since 2015 but his post is still helping people.

I'll bet you $50. it can be adjusted without changing the hinges!!
Don't know how many members I've helped with this but if I had a $1. for each one, I could probably buy another truck.

Open hood. Hold in open position. Have someone loosen the rear two hinge to fender bolts (on each side) and loosen the front one just a tad. Push hood up till the hinges rotate backward a bit. Tighten rear bolts on both hinges. Check alignment as you lower hood. 99-100 times, this adjustment will lower the rear of your hood without having to replace anything.

Ever wonder why a set of old hinges with old springs have a perfectly adjusted hood till it is removed one time and then all of a sudden the "hinges are bad"?

Hinges do get worn out but, in most cases by pushing the hood up when hinges are loose, you can leverage the hinge enough to get a perfect adjustment.

See GMC Paul's tech tips for hood alignment adjustment~~~~~

HUCK
If you do this be sure and watch both sides of the hood the first time you close it, and close it slowly.. If both sides don't move the same it could close cockeyed and chip the paint.

this is very true, many times i have seen the front cab supports rusted away, and more commonly the bushings rotted away or sagged and blown out, and that will cause weird fender to door alignment issues too, a lot of good response and tips in this thread, i have used that alignment tip that LockDoc posted about the hood hinges, and it really works well to lower the back of the hood, in most cases, i would look really close at everything, frame and body, as mentioned..and 68 C10 driver makes good points about aftermarket panels and panel fitment as well. good luck, and let us know how you make out

Re: Hood and dooor gaps

I agree with the adjustment on the hood hinges and the probability of bushings or mounts on the cab.

Re: Hood and dooor gaps

Thanks everybody! I bet you are right about the Hood hinge, and I never would have thought about cab bushings. Makes me feel a lot better about the truck. Hopefully gonna take a look today and start my own project!

Re: Hood and dooor gaps

Shortly after I got my truck I noticed the hood was kicked up like that in the back. Prior to me opening and closing the hood a few times there wasn't a gap at the back like that. Here's what I did and haven't had any problems since (10+ years).

Open the hood all the way. Use a spray lubricant to lubricate all the joints on the hinges. Then slowly lower and raise the hood about 1/2 to 3/4 of the way several times to work the lube into the hinges. Once the hinges were fully lubricated my original hood to fender gap returned.

Might be worth trying before loosening any bolts.

Re: Hood and dooor gaps

A bit hard to tell but rocker bottom of the door gap seems a little goofy. It might be a solid truck but I'm thinking a fair amount of body filler.
