Should I do this or not?

Found for sale local a 49 5 Window GMC close by. I make the drive to see it and find out for 1 its a chevy. (the owner was suprised to find this out by the way, aparently the three large chevrolet emblems on the hood didnt get the hint accross) For starters I would like a GMC better but I digress. As of the moment it is just a cab on a chasis. He has all body parts(he thinks) Hood looks good. One fender is slightly damaged. All straight glass in cab is busted but corners are good. No rust in cab. Beautiful griile that was kept inside and polished. Firewall and interior have been painted. It has a grand prix rear axel and front end on it. The frame is welded together right in front of the cab and apears to have been done rigidly. The bed is completly disasembled fair at best and possibly not all there. All I seen was the sides, fenders and front peice(wich was scatered all over under weeds covered in mud ect) and as of now he can't find all the interior peices. I dont see how with the front frame the front clip would bolt on but he said it was together and driven not all that long ago. His ad says he wants 1000, he told me over the phone 750 and when I was lookin at it he said he might take 500. I dont need it now, but I love the 5 window trucks and would hate to let a good deal pass. What you guys think? here is a link to the ad if it helps http://www.thenex-techclassifieds.co...257325&cpage=8

Re: Should I do this or not?

A rust free 5-window cab for $500 isn't a bad deal based on what I see people asking in my neighborhood. On a '49 there isn't much left on that cab that would tell a Chevy from a GMC. I would be tempted to pick it up and build a GMC based on that cab.

Of course I'm crazy enough I'm taking the top and dash from a rusty 5-window '54 GMC and dropping it on a 3-window '54 Chevy...

Re: Should I do this or not?

this is one of those deals where you almost need to see it for yourself, or atleast for me it would be. If almost everything is there $500 isnt a bad deal, I think. has the front clip been done half way descent will the front tires fit inside the fenders? I would like to say just do it but it isnt my $$ your spending, if nothing else the chrome grill is worth it

Re: Should I do this or not?

Heck, just the sheet metal is worth $500 - 2 or 3 times that if it is rust free. I'd be cautious about the front end, but that's just because I don't trust some people's work that easily

I'd say hurry up and get it before someone else does - $500 is a steal! Just the grill is worth that...

Re: Should I do this or not?

Yah, I would grab that in a hearbeat. I just picked up a 55 1st series and it is in shambles, but it was slightly cheaper than what you are paying, slightly.

If this has a title, dangggggg that would be a steal. If not, it is still a really good deal. Go for it, even if you don't do anything with it. You can re-sell it and get even more than you put into it.

This looks real nice, plus gots all the glass. There are just so many things that you can get money from this.

If it had a title, I would pay 1k no problem.

Re: Should I do this or not?

I am hoping I can wrangle the cash in time. Dont have it now. Someone was suposed to come buy my triumph this weekend but havnt heard from them. If they dont come I am going to see if I can give him a couple hundred to hold it till I get paid. I was thinking it was a great deal, and everyone here seems to agree. I hope to make it happen. It would be neat to keep going along the path it is already on or maybe sit it on my 83 4x4 chasis. Who knows, step one find the extra 300-400 bucks i lack. Im a single father with heavy wage garnesments so unfourtunatly extra dough is hard to come by. But hopefully I can work something out.

Re: Should I do this or not?

Sounds like you've already been punched hard but it is SO worth the dough from what I see. That floor looks awesome from the one picture. I paid $500 for a cab not as good and had it shipped from TX. If I had the dough, I'd send it to you to go buy it for me!!

Re: Should I do this or not?

Man...you're about five hours from me! If I did not already have a very similar project underway I think I would arm wrestle you for it! How big an ol boy are you? Seriously I am too old for that activity anymore. Back to the truck though....great price for what I see. Cab alone is worth the cash. You can always put a GMC front clip on it. I may know of a couple even. Sell some of your other listed assets or work a trade with the trucks seller. Can't beat a five window AD truck for cool!!

Re: Should I do this or not?

Guess it is clear that you should have pounced on this deal. Where I am there is not a supply of old steel vehicles and need to be brought in. This is way too good to pass on regardless of where you live.

Re: Should I do this or not?

When I consider the fact that a brand new steel cab is about $8K I realize it is pretty cool that this stuff is still around. I saw hundreds of these type of deals on Craigslist when I was looking for one. These trucks are the best bargain in old steel in my opinion.

Re: Should I do this or not?

unfourtunatly I havnt. I get paid the 5th and I may, and thats a big may have the extra cash then. I know I could probably sell the grille alone on here and get most of money back. There is a 49 GMC on the farm but its not a 5 window but theres my clip for the front. Hope some cash floats my way before someone else jumps on this but thats not my kind of luck.

That's no excuse. Think about something you can cut back on next month to save money....
Do you really need electricity all month? Ain't it time you went on a diet?
Comon, be creative, you'll find the cash
