What is she?!

So my truck is a 1982 c1500 converted to 4x4 and I'm pretty sure she's on 3/4 ton axles. Anyone know what rear/front end I'm sitting on? Because I don't.

Re: What is she?!

Rear is a full float 14 bolt and the front is a GM 10 bolt. Not a bad combo, but the front can pose a problem in a heavy left foot or 38"+ tires...

37" tires but a pretty heavy left foot... what problems?

Edit - lol I'm retarded... My right foot is the heavy one.

Re: What is she?!

The axle shafts can handle an experienced right foot however, tend to bust yoke ears. Or just break in half.

Re: What is she?!

10bolt is a weak front, especially for that large a tire.

Re: What is she?!

Aftermarket axle shafts or a Dana 60.

Do you wheel it or just drive around town and on fire roads?

Re: What is she?!

If you're heavy wheeling and putting some serious torque on your front axle to get it to crawl up and over big rocks, you may want to upgrade. If you're just taking simple dirt roads and not really "rock crawling", your front end should be fine.

Your rear axle is solid, she's as strong as they come.

Re: What is she?!

If you drive it hard off road the 10 bolt is a time bomb,If you drive it daily with light off road like trails the 10 bolt might live a while. What t case does he have?

Re: What is she?!

I'll let yah know how long a 10 bolt will live. My truck is similar to yours, save the rear, I have the semi float 14 bolt. Stock 350, 4-speed with a 205, right now 4" of lift, but they don't clear the 38.5" boggers very well. I need to either lift it more, or move the axle forward. The latter might be the easiest and cheapest, so probly go that route. Just want to go play in the mud with it, so we shall see how long it will last...

Re: What is she?!

I ran 38.5 tsl's under my suburban through the 10bolt from a stock 91 tbi 350/4l80/241/4.10s granted not the most powerful combo but i have a heavy foot per say as no one wants to ride with me anymore lol but i finally broke the passenger u joint after pulling out something i never should have been pulling on, i would run the 10 bolt again any day of the week but i know im one of the very few

But you truly won't know till you try it out, i personally wouldn't give up on it because other people broke it. i drove mine both daily on the 38s all over and managed to ramp the front once and all was good

Re: What is she?!

I broke the c off a dana 60 in a 79 f350 with 38s on it.But it was my hard head and lead foot that broke it.Nothing is bullet proof but anything can be build up enough to where its close.

Yeah,guys make it sound like a Dana44 or 10-bolt will explode as soon as you hit 4wd and a Dana60 is invincible. Dana60s are "better",that's all. I've broken a few. I've broken a 2.5t Rockwell,for that matter.

What he said.
I have a stack of broken axle shafts from 10 bolts and Dana 44s and have stripped the spiders out of one. This was in a 76 Jimmy with a mind 350 and 36 inch tires. I was running a 4 speed. An auto tends to be slightly easier on axles.

I also drove it like it was a rental, so I may not be the best example.
