1971 Suburban (first post!)

Howdy all,
I'm brand new to this forum. Let me first apologize for not including pictures in this post. I promise they'll be up tomorrow.

Anyway, I was in Nashville (playing the Grand Ole Opry for the first time...HOOT HOOT) and a close friend of mine suggested that I buy his 1971 Suburban. Well, long story short, I did. Drove that baby straight home to northeast Texas, c'mon.

She's got a year old crate 350, 700r4 transmission., edelbrock carb and intake.

I've read quite a bit on here regarding molding and its' removal; however, it's mostly with respect to the trucks. Bessie (as she was called by my friend and previous owner), only has the top molding under the Windows.

Now, that wouldn't be a problem, except that the molding seems to be holding water and causing rust to crack the (not original) paint job.

I'm curious as to whether any of you fine folks has had any experience with such a predicament and, if so, whether you'd be so kind as to share some advice with me.

I need to remove it to see what I'm dealing with as far as the rust is concerned.
I'd search the forums some more, but I'm not sure exactly what to call the trim pieces.

Once again, I know how forums work...the pics are on the way. It's raining out, and the car is under a cover.

Cheers and thanks in advance for the help

Seems like the only thing you could do to prevent that is to seal along the top edge of the trim. I wouldn't seal the bottom so if any moisture got under it it could drain out. Maybe if you took the trim off, sandblasted the rusty areas, and treated them with a rust inhibitor before priming and painting it would hold for quite a while.....

Truck looks pretty nice, at least it's running and driving with the interior all there. What are your plans for it?

My plan is to fix any little issues and then drive the **** out of it. I'll post some pictures of the paint issues in the morning. I'm stuck on a bus now with minimal wifi coverage. I'm curious what y'all would do about it.

Re: 1971 Suburban (first post!)

Here's what I'm dealing with.

Any thoughts on how bad it might be underneath?

Advice?

How do I get this trim off?

The truck looks pretty good. I think you're going to find bondo on those panels and under the trim. I've seen those cracks before.

I stuck my camera in and it appears the clips need to be squeezed from the inside. The corner pieces are a little different.

Thanks for the reply and the info!!
This is probably going to be a silly question, but do you get to those clips from behind the interior panels of the vehicle?

The cracks don't seem terrible, yet, but I'm paranoid about rust. I'm trying to decide whether it's even worth fixing at this point.

Yes, I'm slowly going back together with the interior. I'm changing from parchment to saddle.

I'm not sure why.

Re: 1971 Suburban (first post!)

I think though with the clips is that there is dum dum installed with them and it gets hard and will make it difficult to remove them. I haven't tried on mine yet, but I got a replacement piece and got one clip with it. I think the best way is to use a tool, like a windshield trim removal tool (for a Camaro or similar), where it hooks on the arm or leg of the clip. I don't know whether that will be difficult though, I think it will. I will be removing all my trim for paint and to re-finish the trim

When you say "worth fixing at this point" what exactly do you mean? I'm asking because you have some options.
