sanity check - transfer case yoke

Hi Guys,

I've done lots of reading and think I have a handle on things now but will double check with you all to be sure.

My truck has a
dana 44 front diff
TH400 3 spd auto tranny
NP 205 tcase
GM 14 bolt / 10.5" rear diff

I am going to replace the fluids in all of the above in preparation for spring wheeling.

I'm starting with the np205 because i had a leak in the output shaft housing anyways where the aluminum looking piece meets the cast 205, i took it apart and there was no gasket / sealant there??

My question is, how can I tell whether that is a slip yoke or fixed? I've read that fixed is better because it prevents your tail shaft from pulling out of the tcase? Is this right?

Also, is there anything else you can tell me about this setup from the pics? I'm still learning lots here

Thanks again!

Re: sanity check - transfer case yoke

Right, while i'm at it.. i put on a new speedo cable but am still not getting a reading on my gauge. Does anything look out of place there?

The cable moved the needle on my gauge when i twisted it by hand to the left, but not to the right.

Also, there is a spade connector on the top passenger side of the transfer case - any idea what that was / is supposed to be for?

TY!

If you pulled the driveshaft from the rear and that front shaft comes out of the transfer case then it's definetely a slip yoke... looks like one to me but I'm no NP205 expert...

Here is what I would call a fixed yoke.

Re: sanity check - transfer case yoke

Did you try hooking up the speedo gauge without the ratio adapter box? Might try that to help troubleshoot the issue...

Ohh, ok i get it now.. yeah it is a slip then, had it out last spring to get new u-joints but just didn't know how to determine what it was duh.

For my purposes, I dont think i need to go fixed. If i ever have an issue w/ the slip, I will but i'm not doing any insane offroading.

Thanks!

ps. regarding spedometer, i'll try that.. didn't know what that part was either. Ratio adapter... right!

Re: sanity check - transfer case yoke

If it's not that then there might be a gear behind that aluminum shaft cover that the cable hooks in to... in tranny's they are plastic and can break... last of course would be your speedometer, if you pull the whole dash then you can test it with a drill...

Re: sanity check - transfer case yoke

That is definitely a slip-yoke 205. Easiest way to tell a 205 from others is the little three bolt cover inbetween the rear output and the front output bearing support cover.

Re: sanity check - transfer case yoke

Hey guys, thanks alot!

I resealed that output shaft housing with some rtv silicon, i hope that stuff is forgiving because I couldn't get the rear off the tailshaft off so I silicon'd it in the 3" gap available.. time will tell :/
