Swap in a 465/205

I am going to swap a SM465/NP205 combo from a 71 for my 700R4/NP208 in my 1986 K5. A previous owner installed the current motor a 350 for the stock 305. I have not run the numbers, but I think the 350 is an earlier 2-piece rear seal 350. So, help me run down my list of parts:

I have the 71 flywheel/clutch/pressure plate and the clutch fork

I need the clutch pedal assembly and will need to modify the tranny hump. In 1986 what type of clutch setup did it have? mechanical linkage or hydraulic?

Will the 71 bell housing work with the newer clutch linkage? or will I need to source a new one?

I could probably scour many sources for info but then I wouldn't get to talk with you all.

In 71 they used a mechanical clutch setup with a bell crank or z bar. In 86 they used a hydraulic clutch. Hydraulic is better (in my opinion) than mechanical. However you'll either need a different bellhousing or you'll need to buy a slave cylinder bracket made by advance adapters or fabricate your own bracket. You'll also want to find the factory clutch pedal assembly for an 85-87 pickup and bolt it in.

I prefer the 4 speed over the 700R4/208. I'm going to look at advanced adapters. Thanks.

The SM465/NP205 combo is a hell of a lot stronger than the weak-sister 700R4/NP208.

Very nice build! I am going to get the tranny/TC tomorrow. the guy has a bunch of stuff to go with it, so maybe I can get all the clutch linkage too.

You dont need to change the floor to a bolt out or anything. I put a 79 2wd auto cab on a 4x4 chasis with the 465 trans. All I did was cut the hole for the shifter. Having the bolt out floor pan does make pulling/installing the trans alot easier though. I prefer the mechanical clutch personally as you have alot more feel of clutch engaugement. The only factory hyd clutch I liked was from a 60 chevy pickup. It was adjustable so pedal hieght could be adjusted to your liking.

well floors changed in 81 and Low hump floora were a little flatter after. If anything it makes it easier to drop trans and case. Only a handful of 81 to 87 s bolt in , so if u find a hump, buy it
