Running pusher fan

On my '49 3100 I am going to have to run a pusher fan setup due to the limited amount of space between the water pump pulley and the radiator. I also will be running an A/C setup down the road, so this won't be a bad setup at all.

I am going to run something similar to this (from the HAMB).

My question is I was thinking of NOT running a shroud as the natural flow of air would be cut down if I did. What do you think of that?

Re: Running pusher fan

I did the same thing on my 57. I found that with a shroud, you are correct, the natural flow is cut off and the temps on my 283 started creeping up, especially while sitting in traffic.

I would avoid a pusher fan altogether if I can but, if I have to, I would definitely go without a shroud.

Re: Running pusher fan

How much space do you have between the engine and radiator? I started out with a pusher fan but I was not getting enough air flow. Keep in mind I'm not using a stock radiator because of my sub frame.

Like you I thought that I did not have enough room then I heard about fans offered by Cooling components. http://www.coolingcomponentsinc.us.com/

The total thickness of my fan with shroud is only like 2 3/4".

You might see if you can get creative and fit one of these. I have been happy with mine. Thay also offer great customer service plus there made in the USA.....

Good luck
Marc

Re: Running pusher fan

Thanks for the responses.

@Marc - I have less than that for room between my water pump and radiator.

So my only option without huge modification is running a pusher which I am not too concerned with.

Re: Running pusher fan

I was too close as well, so I knotched my core support allowing me to move my radiator forward slightly to create just enough room. Initially, I too didn't think that I had room. You might need to stare at it for a while to see how creative you can be to gain more room.

I was told that shooting through the radiator using a pusher fan cuts the CFM's by about 50%. I was also not doing myself any favors by using a cheap Ebay fan. If you are running A/C later down the road where will you mount the condenser? Infront of the fan or behind it?

Re: Running pusher fan

The pusher is way less efficient and without a shroud, in traffic, where there's no air flow and the fan has to work, it will only be cooling the part of the radiator where the fan is. It's true a shroud cuts down on flow but only at cruise where there's some natural flow so there is an offset. That flow restriction also happens on puller fans with shrouds. How about 2 10" fans with the center shallow so the WP pulley can fit in? I've seen some shrouds made for two. It's not as efficient as one larger fan but it might be the answer to your problem.

http://www.the-fan-man.com/sidewinder.html - try this link - the sidewinder fan they show in the picture is what i am using - it has a rotational fan motor that can be out of the way of anything - and it pulls a lot of air - check it out - it works very well

Re: Running pusher fan

I have a jeep I used for rock crawling and had tons of heat issues because the motor would be working hard with no cruising flow. I changed it over to a generic aluminum radiator and large pusher fan without a shroud. Never had any issues after that. With the limited space in a Jeep engine compartment made pusher fans the only choice. I never saw anyone have issues with pushers.

Re: Running pusher fan

You could swap out the water pump for one of the short shaft ones. You can get them on ebay. If you add ac later like you said, you are going to run into fitment issues with the Vintage Air unit and a pusher style fan.

My water pump is already short enough. I am just going to run a pusher fan setup.

Actually, I have spoken to a few technicians at Vintage Air and they said most of the people that utilize their systems run a pusher style fan, which I have seen. Keeps the condenser even cooler with the air being blown right into it.

Thanks for the info, it seems when I was researching pusher fans a lot of them are in Jeeps. Now I know why.

Daze this is an awesome option. I don't think I have 2" in between, but I am going to double check. This would be the absolute best option for me if I can run a puller.

Thanks again.

Re: Running pusher fan

Old Air Products has a setup with a pusher fan, shroud, and radiator from Griffin that works with their condenser. Not cheap but the integration is nice. Here it is without the fan;

i really had v v little room but as stated before sidewinder worked for me- remember you can turn the entire motor / fan clockwise for the best fit . good luck !!!
