Starter Alignment for 1970 Chevy C10 350V8
We recently replaced a starter motor on a 1970 Chevy C10 with a 350 V8. There were no shims on the original starter and three screws hold the starter to the bell housing. Two bolts go through the starter into the bell housing. One bolt goes from the bell housing and screws into the starter. The starter is not aligned to the fly wheel and the bendix gear is jamming into the flywheel. Looking for the methodology to align the starter to the flywheel.

What transmission do you have? Do the bolts go in vertical or horizontal? LockDoc

The bolts are horizontal. The transmission is a 3 speed standard on the column.

To my knowledge, there is no adjustment to the bell housing mounted starter. It's in the right place or no. You may try rotating the flywheel just a tic and see if it works. And make sure the starter was assembled with the correct Bendix if you have the old one to compare to. It is possible to run a block mounted starter if you have the 168 tooth flywheel. On my Jimmy I run a non-supported nose starter when I ditched the bell housing mount. I've got a 153 4 cylinder mounted on a test stand with 153 tooth flywheel and the bellhousing from a 3 sped truck. I also used the unsupported nose starter on it. A supported nose wouldn't go in the bell housing hole with the bolt locations of the smaller flywheel.

That should be the correct starter for your application. I don't think they make two different models for the different size flywheels but I'm not 100% sure about that. Yours should have the 168 tooth flywheel. They may actually make a starter like that for the 153 tooth flywheel and if so that may be what you have. No way to adjust that type of starter other than elongating the mounting holes. I have never had a problem with the three hole bell housing mount starters I have used. If you want I can move this to the Engine and Drivetrain Forum, you may get more info there than here. LockDoc

I don't think there was an application with the 153 tooth flywheel and the cast iron bellhousing.
I just wasn't very clear I guess. I was just talking about the 153 project and what I had learned about starters in that "journey".
