Hydrovac Brake Booster Questions

So, I'd like to keep my 60 GMC 1000 series some what original equipment and I noticed the hydrovac (midland?) was probably the brake booster used on this truck originally.

A couple questions:

1. Can this be used on a truck that has the clutch and brake master cylinder? I *think* this might be possible since it appears that the booster is 'remote' and not installed directly to the master cylinder.

2. I know it uses the vacuum from the carburetor, would my Stromburg WW2 work with this?

3. Does anyone have pictures of one of these installed on their 1/2 ton CHevy or GMC?

4. Things to look out for with these?

5. Rebuild yourself or send it to someone? If send it, recommendations?

Thanks for any details with this.

Re: Hydrovac Brake Booster Questions

Yes, the remote mount Hydrovac was used on 60-62 GMC and Chevy trucks . It mounts on the inner fender , separate from the master cylinder.

A carb or intake vacuum port should be fine.

There are places that rebuild them. Rebuilt units are available from Cardone (eBay) for 175-225.

Interesting that cardone sells them rebuilt.

Let me find a part number and perhaps someone on here can verify I’m buying the correct one.

Thanks for the response!

It will not come with the mounting bracket (unless you have one) Mine had a home made mounting bracket-- Pics of how mine was mounted.

Holy smokes this is cool.

It seems there are several variants of the 'hydrovac booster'. There is one on ebay, but I'm uncertain if it's correct for our trucks.

Thoughts? http://r.ebay.com/dnitQH

I know the ad says it is, but the experts are on this site.

Thats not cheap if it doesn't work. google hydrovacs many out there rebuilt. Other tks used them too. Mine is completely different as you can see.

a member here 60-66 might chime in on this. He is one of the experts on here.

WOW! That's a nice booster and bracket 61K10.

Those pictures are super helpful. Thanks!

I'm actually pondering getting one from remaninc.com now.

They offer a: Remanufactured Bendix Single Diaphragm Hydro-Vac (Casting Number: 379900)

Re: Hydrovac Brake Booster Questions

Probably your best deal as the e-bay one is used. You can make the brackets pretty easy.

Re: Hydrovac Brake Booster Questions

Just some more food for thought...

If you do decide to have it remanded, I'd highly recommend going through DS Brake Parts in VA. http://dspartscompany.com/

I have a Midland Hydrovac on my '61 GMC 5000, it's a harder to find model and I could not for the life of me find a remanded one to buy online. Talked to the guy on the phone, shipped it down and they had it back in time for me to get to a truck show. Worked perfect... And the price was fair.
