Power steering gear box ?

Ok so I have a 67 Chevy truck that was a manual steering truck.
I pulled the old MSGB off and am trying to install a power steering Gear box from off of a 72 Chevy truck.
The problem is the back of the top of the gear box is hitting the riveted core support l bracket!!!!
Is there anyone that has run into this before???
My frame does have the dimples to get proper alignment
Therefore to eliminate the need for shimming.
Can anyone help me?
Is there a differance between a 67 and a 72 PSGB??
Any insight will be appreciated
Shawn

Re: Power steering gear box ?

NDS 68
That pic is exactly what I'm up against!!!
Identically!!!!
I do need to dimple my frame but...
Will that give me enough clearance to get past the core support bracket or
Will I still have to cut/ grind it to match?
PS:
I do have pics but I can't figure out how to load them.
But the pic in the link provided is what my pics look like
Your thoughts and info really are appreciated

Re: Power steering gear box ?

I had to cut the support on my '67 as well as clearance the frame since it wasn't originally dimpled.

Re: Power steering gear box ?

Yep. If yours looks like mine. Dimple the frame just allows the steering box to sit flush on the frame mounting points. Then the longer box interferes with the brace so you have to clearance for that also.

Re: Power steering gear box ?

Yeah I had to cut mine, I just used a cut off wheel. You may also have to notch the bumper bracket. Nate

Re: Power steering gear box ?

I got mine in with a adapter plate and have had no problems. My frame was not dimpled at all. Will try to post pics.

Re: Power steering gear box ?

If I do this right, you will see photos of my power steering gear box, the adapter plate between it and the frame, and a photo showing the steering column that was installed. The column is a bit off center, but it steers well and does not wander at all at high speed on the freeway. Before I put the inner fender or wheel well back in, i had to cut it back to fit around the gear box.

Re: Power steering gear box ?

Yup, 67 must be dimpled, and clearance core support mount, and reportedly clearance the bumper bracket too.

Re: Power steering gear box ?

can you heat up the frame with a small propane torch and hammer in the dimple or do you need a bigger torch to do so?

thanks

Wink Re: Power steering gear box ?

Depends on the size of your hammer. Some where on here there was someone who cut a slit at the top and bottom of where the dimple would be, heated it up, and beat it in. That's what I did and then just welded the cuts up.
