Pictures and Discussion of 77-78 Buckskin Interior Paint/Dye

Hey all, I'm redoing the interior of my '77 which on the option sheet says it had "64D LUU1 BUCKSKIN SPEC" whatever that means. I've seen some option sheets that say "LT BUCKSKIN" but mine doesn't say that. I've ordered no less than 5 cans of buckskin interior spray from various places (SEM on Amazon, proprietary from USA Industries, a can of Saddle from LMC, etc) and can't see to nail the shade. There's no one in my area that I trust to spray these panels, everyone is a hack around here. Anyone have any luck with getting ahold of the darker Buckskin aerosol that looks like my interior?

I had a PPG dealer match and mix a quart of paint for my door panels. Very pleased with the results.

My 75 has Buckskin. Code 62L, text 62 Buckskin.
The pic is the interior paint with some plastic sprayed with Rustoleum Tan. Seems that GM's idea of Buckskin is a bit darker then most other folks.

The plastic was a pull-a-part find and started out as dark red. The carpet door piece was scavenged from a friend's 80s suburban that he was scrapping. No clue on a color code for that.

I know Home Depot does a pretty good match job, don't know if they have any customizable paint good for plastic.

I believe the spid sheet, buckskin spec c, means "special cloth".

It would be best, if you stayed with USA! Industries, unless you get it mixed, but that's a pain. It's better when it's already in a spray can. But buying it from several different places, is almost a waste of time and money. Getting Saddle from LMC was definitely a mistake, they don't even come close to the correct Saddle. And Saddle is not Buckskin. USA! comes damn near spot on with the colors. You got to remember your interior is faded, big time. Which is the whole reason why your wanting to spray everything, correct? So the new color is going to look like "the shade is not nailed".

Re: Pictures and Discussion of 77-78 Buckskin Interior Paint/Dye

Thanks guys. I definitely have my eyes on the USA1 stuff. I actually ordered a can from USA1 last year and color wise it was definitely the closest, nearly perfect, but it was terribly "matte" and they use really low quality spray cans. It sprayed onto the panel all "fibery" if that makes sense, like with little hairs in the paint almost. In comparison, the SEM cans spray beautifully and they have a bit of shine to them. Here's the dash I sprayed in SEM Cordovan brown, which admittedly came out darker than the dash pad was originally (and not only because the dash pad was faded either). It's real tough to nail the colors, even if the panels are faded. I know they're not faded, because even the headliner trim matches the kick panels. Truck came from Washington where there isn't much sun

Weird, cause I use their dye all the time. I use it on the seat garnishes. That way it will match with someone’s truck interior. All the stuff I have dyed has looked great.

I have used lot of the saddle color from lmc and it looks fine on my panels . only difference is i spray clear over it .the clear seems to make it darker or my eyes see a difference in it.

Light Saddle. I only posted those pics, because you were saying that USA1 Industries dye was quote “terrible matte” in cheap spray cans. I was just showing that I have used a lot of USA1 dye, and it looks good.

Is that under the 81-87 colors? I don't see light saddle, only "Saddle Tan":

Honestly that saddle tan looks real close to what my Buckskin was like, but someone painted these panels previously (I think) because the backs of them were blue?

Also, any guesses what my dash pad would be? I notice on the Buckskin trucks that the dash pads were some sort of light brown. I painted mine Cordovan Brown but I'm not 100% happy with it. I want to redo it with a lighter brown, not sure which one though.

The dash pads were darker. In the saddle interiors, they were dark Saddle. Yours do look like they were dyed/painted Saddle. So seeing that they were dyed by someone else, you just need to decide if you want the correct color back in your truck. Your spid sheet says Buckskin, so I would go with that. But it’s your truck

My 78 has buckskin interior. The link is in my signature. We had a batch custom mixed by our local paint shop. I think it’s been 8-9 years and it’s held up good.

You really matched it up well! I wish I had a decent sample for the paint shop, or a paint code even. I actually had a local upholstery shop try and match the paint for me, it came out nasty, there was pink in it. Hard to make it show up on camera but it was definitely not buckskin. Buckskin is a variant of tan/ saddle. It shouldn't have any red in it. Anyhow, I ordered a can of Saddle Tan from USA! as well as a can of Buckskin so I'll report back on my findings. I owe the board pictures of all my spray samples. I've literally ordered every can of saddle/ buckskin/ tan that exists. I have 7 or 8 cans here of unusable paint. At $15-20 each, this is turning out to be an expensive experiment . Ultimately though, the color of the interior is one of the most important parts of the driving experience. If I have an aversion to the color of all the panels, I'll regret not taking the time to achieve satisfaction.

I think I still have an old can of the stuff somewhere. I don’t know if it has the mix formula on it or not. I can check next week.
