‘47-‘54 Kubota power!!

So I have two brand new V2003-T Kubota engines. These little 2 L turbo engines produce a maximum of 60 hp, and around 130 pounds of torque, do you think this engine would be enough to push around these little trucks? I’m just wondering if a guy put a little five-speed manual on it, if it could get up to 70 mph comfortably?
Basically I’m just trying to think of a father-son project, so that the kid can drive for miles and miles and miles burning diesel from the farm, and not have crazy horsepower to horse around with.

I have a feeling it’s just a little too small.

Re: ‘47-‘54 Kubota power!!

i built a 65 big window with a 2.2 s10 drivetrain, it was 120hp and 140 tq, everyone who said it would be slow or disappointing was just 100% wrong. it wasnt going to win any stoplight races but neither did a 2.2 s10, and on the highway I was torque limited to about 80, but everywhere in between stop and 80 was just fun on a bun. the 65 will be a lot heavier than an AD, so I say give it a shot! maybe tweak the boost to get a little more out of it and have fun.

Re: ‘47-‘54 Kubota power!!

I have no idea of what the rpm band of that engine is but the first thing I would do is play with this calculator and see if it is workable.

That means take the sweet spot rpm for that engine and see if it is vialble to set it up in a truck to cruise down the road. Figure that it has to be able to cruise at 70 to run down the big roads.

http://www.advanced-ev.com/Calculators/TireSize/
Figure that an AD truck weighs about 3300 lbs unless you add something real heavy to it.

77 C 30 dualie, 454, 4 speed with a 10 foot flatbed and hoist. It does the heavy work and hauls the projects around.

Re: ‘47-‘54 Kubota power!!

Just thinking that I have a little 130 hp 4AGE engine sitting in a 92 geo Prism gsi an a 5 speed out of a Celica sitting out here that would push an AD down the road faster than you wanted to ride in it if you had it set up right and got the weight down. That little bugger pushed that GSI faster Than common sense allowed.

factor in tire size and figure on a trans with as many gears as you can find. that should help
where abouts in Alberta are you? I am in calgary.

Re: ‘47-‘54 Kubota power!!

One thing i really liked about every Kubota i have owned is the hydrostatic tranny. If one could be incorporated into the build it might have promise. Also the value of the new engines may be more than even a mid crate 350 and trans so there's that.

Re: ‘47-‘54 Kubota power!!

I don't know if this guy is still around or not but he makes an adapter to bolt the Kabota to a turbo 350

https://www.dieselbombers.com/baseme...ock-chevy.html

This may be the shop that made the adapter in the above link.

https://kubotaswappers.myshopify.com/

Not for the thin of wallet though.

The engine seems to be a popular swap in Jeeps for crawlers with the low rpm torque.

This is getting more interesting when you see that there are adapters out there to do the swap with.

Re: ‘47-‘54 Kubota power!!

I was just concerned that if I used an automatic it wouldn’t have enough gears, so I figured with at least a five speed with more gears I don’t need as much power?
I have a spec sheet on the engine, that shows all the power curves, there’s tons of information out there on these little engines, so I know where the sweet spots are and RPM range.

East of edmonton, I just really want to use a diesel, being that I’m on a farm, and have farm fuel discounts, that’s the natural way to go, I just don’t know what other engine options there are out there? I Also have a 6BT Cummins, but that is like a behemoth, I need something small and light, and something that will run off just a couple wires

Re: ‘47-‘54 Kubota power!!

They have a kit for a Trans from a Toyota 22R/RE that is about half the price of the Chevy stick adapter and two wheel drive Toyota transmissions are easy to find.

https://kubotaswappers.myshopify.com...ter-toyota-22r

22R/RE That makes it more affordable. The W 50 series trans are rugged and at least around here a two wheel drive trans isn't that expensive.

3,600 RPM looks like the redline.

Re: ‘47-‘54 Kubota power!!

3000 rpm with a 28 inch tire and a final drive in overdrive of 2.8 equals 87 mph.

That would be a 3.5 rear end with a .80 overdrive.

Drop down to 60 and you are turning 2052 rpm with the same setup.

According to this the V2003-T Kubota engines make their power in the 2600 rpm range V2003-T Kubota engines

I've shown this calculator a number of times before because it is super easy to use and you plug in any three factors and get the fourth. http://www.advanced-ev.com/Calculators/TireSize/ It's from advanced EV an outfit that converts cars to electric but Is great to quickly see what the difference a tire size change or gear ratio change makes on your truck.

Most of us who have driven hundreds of thousands of miles pretty well can find an engine's sweet spot rpm wise running down the highway. That spot that the engine pulls the rig easily but also get it's best fuel mileage. The Cad DTS I used to have would roll down the long roads at 74 mph and pull 25 mpg. hit 80 on the freeway in Idaho and Wyoming and you dropped to 17. It was worth 7 mpg to let everyone including the little green Prius pass us.
