Still on the hunt for a 4x4

So i've checked out just about every 67-72 4x4 within a 500 mile range of Mississippi in the past month.

Either the seller wants too much for their rust bucket, or they "forgot" to mention certain less than desireable items in their craigslist ad.

I was hoping to have a burb in my possession before I went on deployment so I could start planning my build while I was gone but that doesnt look like its going to happen.

Going with some last ditch efforts but if anyone here is close to this one or knows who owns it, mind giving me the lowdown on it?

http://bellingham.craigslist.org/cto/5401748361.html

Thanks in advance!

Re: Still on the hunt for a 4x4

You certainly can't find them down south. The west coast seems to be where there at.

Just going by the ad it looks like a good deal. Getting it back to Mississippi might cost some.

We looked for over 6 months before we found the right one in Arizona. Definitely worth waiting for a west coast car, they're out there.

Thanks, I just saw the Seattle listing this morning. I troll craigslist pretty hard. Text the owner a little bit ago still waiting on a response.

How much and what kind of project are you after? I'm tossing around the idea of parting with mine but it's a pretty solid runner and would be looking for something close to $15k to be interested enough in parting with it

Re: Still on the hunt for a 4x4

That looks like a great rig but way out of my price range. That's what I'm looking to spend total. I lost out on a 69 gmc 4x4 with an LS swap for $10k cause the owner wouldn't take PayPal and I couldn't fly out to CA.

Inevitably I plan to do an LS swap on whatever Burb I pick up and I have seats, 3 point seatbelts and some other odds and ends to make it family friendly.

Looking at the for sale section I know in time something will come up in my price range im just very impatient and know it'll be harder to make a deal while I'm deployed.

Hoping to spend less than $5k, more for a decent non rust bucket, and maybe more for a nice one equipped with AC. Seen a couple for $1-2k without motors and in need of some welding but I've done all that before.

Thanks for the offer

That doesnt look like a bad rig. I bet 2800 cash would buy it. I dont think you are going to find much under 2k that doesnt need a significant amount of work. The PNW does have alot of Suburbans, but most of them have some kind of rust as well.

Ok I thought It was just me thinking it was way overpriced. Nonetheless guys thanks for all the heads up, hoping to look at something this weekend.

I really hate the CL people that post stuff up constantly and never return emails or calls.

Ok so what is it in not seeing in that green 69? Granted 12500 is too much but if it could be had for 10? New engine. Granted there could be unseen issues but if the floors are solid and no rot all it needs is upholstery

Buy one for 3500 that needs rust repair your going to chew up a lot of time and cash fixing

Not a burb guy I'll go back to the pickups

The burbs you have to look hard underneath for rust & since it's been repainted check for bondo. I find the '80-90s repaints are usually worse than original. Especially if that hatch is as rusty & bubbling up as it looks, I may question the rest of the prep job on that repaint. Interior needs to be completely done & newer engine but no pic of it seems odd. You want to upsell the engine if its newer unless its a 10 yr crate & been sitting a long time. It's obviously worth more than three times less but to be worth $10g or high I expect a mint body & interior for a burb. They have a small market share still & take awhile to sell especially at that price range. I've had a few of them & love them, but wouldn't buy one for resale purposes unless I got it super cheap.

A general rule of thumb is to go off eBay where vehicles are way overpriced. I should know I've sold (2) 1969 datsun fairlady roadsters, 1969 Austin mini, 1974 fj40 w/350 swap, 1969 bronco, 1985 merc Gelandewagen w/5spd diesel swap, 1985 fj60, 1969 triumph gt6, and a few others in the past 10 years. The asking price compared to what's being sold should offer more from a sellers standpoint. At the very least take it out of the junk yard, polish it up a bit and make it look like it hasn't been sitting for months. I troll searchtempest and other Craigslist wide search engines and this is a $5-7k example. Just search this site and see what members have sold for that price.

I floated around restoring vehicles on my own time perfecting my skills while working at a high end restoration shop in San Diego. I made the grown up decision 2 years ago for my family and joined the Navy as a mechanic. Now free time is hard to come by and even more so with a baby on the way. Just trying to build a family wagon I can play for keeps with. I moderate on a few other known car forums and if things don't pan out, a member on classicbroncos.com out of Colombia is offering to build a 4 door EB chassis for me for 1/10 of what icon and krawlersedge starts off. So yes, keeping my options open!!

Keep em coming!!!

Re: Still on the hunt for a 4x4

I think if the fella with the green burb spent an entire weekend really detailing that burb he would get decent money for it, maybe not asking price, but a good price.

I looked at this one over the weekend. Pretty solid. Looks pretty much original. Needs a new gas tank, but it is in great shape. A young guy owns it and has several other restoration projects he is working on. His family is moving this spring, so I bet you can get it less than $3500. I would have tried to buy it, but I ended up buying a 1965 GMC Suburban 4x4.

Re: Still on the hunt for a 4x4

I am also on the hunt for a 3 door 4x4.
Like stated, they are almost all way over priced.

I started a FB page dedicated to the 3 door suburbans, there are a couple of guys with decent rides for sale.

Check it out if you would like:

Thanks,
