First Time Build- 71 Cheyenne - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Hey everyone! New to the threads from VA and been checking this site out for a while picked up on alot of cool ideas to start my first restoration. I'm a young guy bout 25 and have really only had experience with MINOR auto repairs and maint. However, I have a family FULL of auto gifted members that help along the way. I love this stuff!

What I have is a 71 Cheyenne that you can see hopefully from start to finish. I am sure I need help along the way and everyone seems like they know there stuff and are very friendly. My project will go as time an money permit as I don't get alot of time off or rich lol. But Im on it to the finish. So here goes.

I am going to try and pull off the bed today, just so I can make SOME progress.

What is the best and most cost effective way to protect the frame?? I plan to get it down to bare metal and I have done some research and found good reviews on POR 15. ANy one have any other recommendations?

thanks for the welcome, i have seen alot of eastwood advertised, may give it a try! will update soon! will probably be the weekend before I can hit it hard again.

Welcome from just sw of Richmond, VA. Looks like a GREAT start for a project!!!
Going to bare metal is a good idea to know what you're working with. I did it with paint stripping discs and wire wheels/cups on a grinder....but looking back aircraft stripper would have been faster...

Thanks VA72, I have the same wire cup grinder attachment I bought just for this task.

BLUIDVL thanks for taking a look at my thread! Eventually I hope to re-do interior to a black/grey and paint the exterior in a metalic maroon ((still a debate)) I was looking for a 4WD frame to swap but as a first project I think I will stick to a 2WD and maybe lower it a few inches.

You have a great project to start with, IMO keep it a 2wd and lower it. I like the sounds of maroon as your choice of colour. If you get a chance take a look at the colour metallic black cherry.

Here is more pics.. progress is slow but its coming. I took the bed and seat out to get an idea of what kind of fram work I am looking at and the frame (besides rust) is in great solid shape no "soft spots"

the bed mount bolts were next to gone when i took them off and the mounts are rusted through, gonna have to find somthing to do abount that

Great project and welcome to the truck board! Another product that works well on chassis would be some Rustoleum brand. I have used POR a lot and it works really well too. Good luck with the truck. I also think Black Cherry Metallic would be a sweet color!

So it;s been a few days since my last up date. Been working on barrowing a motor stand and lifter then finally got it. So took the block out today. Ran out of daylight to go any farther today. Also just over the last few days I ordered new bed sills (to replace the 2 rusted out) and removed the old ones. Pics coming next!

Ok so it was a long winter with not much progress.. But spring is here and time to get back started this week i had been doing a little touch up on the motor. Cleaned and painted it.

I bought a some valve covers and other items to dress it up a little. Also just got my new alumnmun intake.

small update.. replaced timing cover and gaskett, oil pan and gaskett.. getting warm out here so looking to start on some frame and body work in the coming days/weeks.. working outside with no shop is a pain but gettn there!
