Key removal

I just purchased a 2003 GMC 3500 4x4 dump truck. when I shut it off I can't remove the key from the ignition switch without pushing the shift lever up a bit. It seems like the spring that holds the shift lever up it loose or maybe there is an adjustment to it to keep the lever up in position, it only has to move about a 1/2" up and the key comes out. Is this something that has an adjustment or does something need to be replaced. In either case can you give instructions or is this better off at the dealership? Thanks

Re: Key removal

I thought that was a Ferd problem. Not sure what the fix is but here's a bump for ya.

Re: Key removal

I'd try adjusting the shifter cable before I took it anywhere. I can't tell you where it will be, but there should be a joint in the cable where you can adjust it or one of the ends will be adjustable.

Re: Key removal

it seems to me that the cable is adjusted correctly as it is in the right position when shifts thru the gears, it is just a weak spring or something when you put it in park that the lever doesn't go all the way forward, toward the dash to release the key everything else seems okay.

Re: Key removal

The spring could be bad, but try some lube first. Pull back the shift boot and also at end of the column where the cable attaches.

My 2001 1500 does the same thing.Feels like there should be a spring to hold it up but is missing.I don't know how it works but I would like to know too if someone knows.
