Mobil 1 Extended Life & Filter

Everybody,
In my '04 2wd Burb with 105,000 miles, I changed to synthetic Mobil 1 oil (5W-30). I also used a WIX filter. I did the first oil change with synthetic oil at 100,000 miles. Today, I changed it at 105,000 miles. I used Mobil 1 Extended Service with a Mobil 1 Extended Service oil filter. The oil label says it is "good to go" for 15,000 miles. The filter doesn't say.
With conventional oil, I changed my oil & filter at 5k miles. The Burb doesn't do any towing & mostly short trips, since the truck is down.....
So my question is: Does anyone know how long the filter is good for & any other opinions on this oil?
I am going to go to their website & see what I can find.

Thanks,
Chris

Re: Mobil 1 Extended Performance & Filter

The website just says that the filter can be used for longer change out intervals, but doesn't say how long. Also, it is Extended Performance, not Extended Service or Life......

The Mobil One oil filter is made of a synthetic fiber and uses metal supports instead of Paper and cardboard like most standard filters so it will not breakdown and disintegrate. Therefore allowing it to last 15,000 miles. Mobil designed its extended performance oil filter to work specifically with their extended performance oil.

for these trucks I would agree. For somthing newer 10k miles isn't out of the norm. My new Ford Fusion didn't require the first oil change till just under 10k miles.

I'm sure it is, but I would think it was designed with newer motors/technology in mind. Not a 40yo truck engine.

I run the same thing in my 82 K5 with 515,428 miles, my 87 K1500 with 434,532 miles, my 03 Z71 Tahoe with 176,142 miles, and my 02 Silverado with 183,896 miles and still have excellent power and oil pressure. I also do the 15,000 mile intervals with the performance oil before that I was doing 7500 intervals with the original mobil one.

good info. were all the miles with mobil one? Maybe you could tell us when you switched to mobil on each vehicle and the motor type. 434k miles is impressive.

Edit. Not sure how I wondered into the 99-06 section. Thread makes more sense now. lol.

The 82 has a 305V8 the original owner could not remember when he switched to mobil one. The 87 has a 305 V8 and it was switched to mobil one at about 130,000. The 03 Z71 has the 5.3L flex fuel and it had synthetic in it when I bought it from a Chevy dealer in Iowa about 2 years ago and ive been running mobil one ever since. The 02 has a 4.8L V8 and it has had mobil one since about 55,000 miles.

Re: Mobil 1 Extended Life & Filter

I had an 01 Silverado and switched to Mobil 1 Synthetic at around 50k. I had the truck for 4 years and put 365k miles on it. I changed the oil in it about every 10k. Never had any issues with the engine. I currently have an 04 Silverado which I converted at 15k miles to Mobil 1 until about 89k then went to Royal Purple synthetic and run it to 10k between changes. Currently have around 115k on it. But as far as Mobil 1, I never had any issues with either truck, especially the 01' since it was an up and down the road truck with about 1000-1200lbs worth of tools and parts in the bed. Both trucks had the 5.3 engine, auto, 2wd 01' and 4wd 04', Ext Cab, short beds on both..

Re: Mobil 1 Extended Life & Filter

I dont care what oil you use, 3-4k on conventional, 5-7k on synthetic. We void warranties all the time at the dealership I work at for people using amsoil synthetic and stretching the change intervals to 15-25k. Then they wonder why their timing chain, cam bearings etc are worn out at 40k. .. CHANGE YOUR OIL PEOPLE.... its cheap.

you can't make a blanket statement like that. Many new cars havel 10-15k intervals. But yes, If your cars under warranty you need to change the oil when the manufactur recomends, weather that be 5k or 15k miles.

Yes I can and I will tell you why... this 10k intervals that are on the newer cars... you wanna know why its so high???? To keep the yearly cost of maintenance down so it looks good on paper and to make the government happy. Has nothing to do with making the engine last. I've been in engines that people change their oil every 3k and ones that wait till the oil life monitor is 0% and its a noticeable difference in sludge and buildup. I live it, I do this everyday and its how I make my living...... and everybody that works on them for a living will tell you the same... Agree, disagree or whatever I dont care..... you wont see me stretching oil changes.. Its cheap insurance....

i work on cars everyday it not unusual to drain the oil in a benz or a honda or any other vehicle with an oil life counter to say 0% which is 10k-15k and it be nothing but sludge coming out of it. i have a 99 accord and Honda recommends every 5k mile on normal oil but the maint required light does not come on till 7-10k. Mine gets changed every 3k using castrol high mileage (part synthetic) and the oil is dark at 3k i'd hate see 15k on an oil change
