I had never rebuilt a nv4500. ive done a handfull of other manuals, all older 4 speeds though. it was pretty easy. there are no clearances to set other than end play. for the most part its disassemble and re-assemble. there are a few bearings that require creativity or the correct tools to remove, but i did OK without

Good to know. they had to order the one i have from east jesus nowhere. the photo it looked OK, but ill see when Oriellys calls i guess. the one i ordered is for an 89.

Re: 72 k20 project

Other than the usual stuff, locking 5th gear nut or collar, replacing the coutershaft and swapping out the input for the Cummins version I wasn't really planning on it. But really there's no telling once I get in there and start ordering parts. Any suggestions?

i'm guessing you are starting with a gm 4500? i would go ahead and upgrade the input unless you are staying strictly stock power levels. you will be needing a clutch anyhow so you can get whatever you need with a big input hub. is the counter gear bad?

Re: 72 k20 project

Dang. i had to go back to the second page of sub'd threads to find this. haha

i had a mild catastrophe with my phone and left my camera when i was visiting Lauren at christmas. so, the pics i did have are gonzo. but, i also wasnt really very productive, so not much has changed.

i did get this handy tig welder as a gift from my wife lady. the cooler was on global backorder for a few weeks but i got it outfitted and built a quicky cart.

i fiddled around for a few days making welds and getting adjusted to the machine. i had a bazzilion weld coupon pics and all of the titanium welds i have done(very few, but they look cool) they all died on my phone...

i installed the 241dhd but haven't taken new pics of it installed. got some work done on the shifters. no pics of that yet either.

but, i did document some recent progress!

this is a condenser, power steering cooler and power steering filter set up.

i knew where i wanted it to be, but if it would fit... turns out it just does. the inner fender still clears, you can remove the filter, might even be able to get to it when the truck is assembled completely. maybe.

put the new welder to work.

i also built this framework to hang the condenser and cooler off of. it is a tight fit, but with just enough of the latch mechanism ground off, it fits.

next is the cooler. and the other billion little things.

Basically. it may be overkill, but the 60$ or whatever it was i spent on the filter and head, plus the additional fittings ill need are a one time expense. filtering the fluid before it goes into the pump is a good thing. keeps the pump happy for a long time. keeps trash out of the box, the hydroboost and the assist ram, so hopefully it just increases longevity across the whole system. kept cool and filtered the fluid should also last longer.

Thanks! im still learning the tricks of it for sure. i have never had an inverter with this much pulse tunability. its a little bit of a learning curve so it is fun dinking with it. still haven't gotten the aluminum fully tuned yet. i also may try to play with some gas mixtures with that for the heck of it too.

Re: 72 k20 project

here are a few more updates.

worked on the cooler mount for the steering fluid

it is 14ga with dimples for posterity

some additional love needed to be made with the release lever on the latch, but for the most part it all fits. just barely. the grille insert may need a touch of material sanded off in one spot also.

here are a couple of the t-case in the frame. hard to get a decent shot from the floor.

i also have this stuff i ordered a while back

and made this

from these things. a flaming river ujoint 3/4"-30x1"DD and a sweet mfg. 3/4"x36x3/4"DD, and a borgeson collapsible shaft, cut to fit.

Re: 72 k20 project

i need an assist ram mount too. i planned on making a ring for the diff cover like i did with the set up on my M715. then a couple so called friends made a suggestion and another week of after work nights went to crap...

i am waiting on a part to get made in the CNC to finish up the ram mount, so the reason for this thing isnt even pictured, yet.

I re mounted these with accomodations for the wood floor bed and also to remove the welded on mounting tabs.

sorry for the IG pic, it was the only place i had it posted that didnt die.

i cut these spacers for the front bags for that extra inch to clear the 35s.

i also have a start on the t-case shift. the bracket needs to be finished and welded. the lever has no handle or knob so i am not done yet by far.

thats all i have pics of so far!

So called friends have some great ideas I'd say. It looks great. I didn't realize you had to raise the bag for the 35's. That is a nice spacer for sure.
