Re: Saved A "Burb"

This is the original 396 I pulled out of the suburban I rebuilt to put in the SWB truck for the guy I got the Burb from. Eng was in good shape. I honed it new rings /bearings/valve job. New cam and Intake from summit. Nothing special but a decent engine.

Re: Saved A "Burb"

New fuel tank/sender/straps $230.00. Most expensive part I have bought so far. After selling the other trucks and making some profit I am into the suburban for a couple of hundred bucks. Minus 6 months worth of weekend and after work labor. Never thought I would be willing to leave the 69 camaro in the garage to take out the ol suburban. My eleven yr old daughter loves cruzing the neighborhood in it. Now that I dont rely on the boat tank were going farther next time.

Re: Saved A "Burb"

Moving on to the inside doing some prep work to get it primed. Cut another coil off front dropped it nice but has it laying on bumpers. Will have to get some drop spindles later when converting to disc.

Re: Saved A "Burb"

Bought some window tint and did it myself. I used to watch a guy at the dealer I worked for do this every day, he sure made it look easy. Had to put some acid on these wheels like I used to put on my old centerlines to bring them around for now till I can upgrade. Still need to try and put an insert in the front spring I cut down too much to get it off the rubber bumper.

Re: Saved A "Burb"

Well my wife was right we got a "letter" . Assocation is taking pics now. The letter was actually for the trash cans that have been in the same spot for the last 10 years. I think there were just upset I did a driveway resto. Funny thing is the "burb" is the main part of pic , but nothing they can say since it runs/drives/inspected. This is why I was thrashing to getting it looking a little better. Fortunately my kids will be out of school soon and I can move on...

Wow. Some people really have nothing better to do! I live in a pretty strict county, I'm sure my letter will come one day..

Re: Saved A "Burb"

Thanks for the replies. My laptop is down so I can't post updates. I sand blasted the truck rallies and painted with left over rally wheel paint from my camaro and installed looks much better. HSRACER I sent you a message to contact me. If it didnt go through email me at K2jenkins@aol.com. I delivered the orange 72 with BBC 396 back too customer started and ran good. Done with the deal.

Re: Saved A "Burb"

I said it over and over that I won't paint it black. But I may be reconsidering. That thing looks so good as is. Maybe after I fix the hole in the back, and the side near the exhaust and tire.

And I definately want to paint the plywood in the back now. Did you sand it before you did it?

I'm gonna crawl on top of mine today to scrub it down, then sand it. Not sure about paint right now, it's been raining and windy.

Re: Saved A "Burb"

I pressure washed it out. degreased and scuffed with scotchbrite pads. Used rustoleum semi-gloss for the floor which will make touch up easier since this is not a show truck.

Sounds like a lot of work. lol

I was thinking of just belt sanding it with a few different grits, vacuuming and blowing it out really good, and painting it.

In it's defense, it's been 'used' pretty good over the years and has some rough spots.

Mine isn't a show truck at all. I just like to make a few spots look as decent as possible. It's built for off-roading. I finally bought a Saturn and retired the Suburban's daily driving duties, but I still use it every now and then. It's too fun to let sit until the weekend. And people love it.

Where did you get your gas tank and did it need any modifications?

I highly recommend a plastic one. That was the first thing I ever ordered online back in 2003. My only complaint is the gas tends to slosh around without bafflecs inside the tank. This can be a problem when four-wheeling if you're a little low on gas.

Bought myself a xmass gift new chrome rings and mirror. Switched to rallies going to stay like this a while nothing special just simple. About to give up on drum brakes even after new shoes still not stopping safely in traffic. Friend has a rough 72 in the field with Disc on that I can have.
