Hello

Hi! I'm glad I found this forum. I recently bought a 1972 GMC K1500 Custom Suburban. It's a neat old truck but it's had a rough life. I have a question about the interior. Evidently, Custom was the base model for GMC in '72. My door panels and seat vinyl (what's left of it!) are parchment and match the illustrations in the brochure. I know it didn't come with the rear side panels, headliner, or third row seat. The second row seat is full length. The inside of the roof has a thick padded vinyl covering over the front seat, and there is evidence that it was on each section between the roof bows. It (or something else)was also glued to the inside of the outer rear side panels. Is this original or should it just be painted steel? I'm sorry if this message is a bit long.

my findings

As far as I know all suburbans had headliners and side panels. Best evidience of side panels would be the mounting brackets mounted to the sides. I've never seen suburbans with the plain steel door panels but there probably was some. Although some blazers did come without side panels, that makes me wonder. I've seen a lot of suburbans just maybe never a plane jane.

I'm almost certain all burbs had headliners.

I was a bit dissappointed in the trim level of this truck. I thought Custom would be a bit nicer, but looking in the 1972 GMC trucks brochure and dealer album, it had become the base model. There's no evidence that the panels or brackets ever existed. There are no srew holes or marks in the paint. I do know that even the second row seat was an option on this truck -- it is listed on the Service Parts ID label. Since there is no third row seat, it is a full width seat like the front, but has the armrests attached to it. If you want in the rear area, you have to jump over it or go around to the tailgate. The doors do have the plastic panels, but the ceiling and rear area look just like a cargo van inside. Just the outer skin and some bracing. Maybe the GMC base model was more stripped down than a Chevy.

Hey guys, thanks for the info! I guess a previous owner probably glued that vinyl to the roof. I'll try to get some pics up if I can.

Burb headliners, & interior

I have 3 Chevy Suburbans two 1/2 ton 1971's, and one 3/4 ton 1972 also one 1/2 ton 1972 GMC Suburban. 4 in all. All have one peice of body color vinyl glued in the first section of the roof. Three of the trucks had a off white perferated headliner and door and cargo side panels. All three have A/C. One truck had a smooth gray headliner and no cargo panels, and no A/C. Also they come standard only with a full size 1st row seat, bucket seats, and the 2 or 3 seat options are avalable. And most seem to always have optional seating. If you ordered 2nd or 3rd row seats heavy duty front & rear springs came with this seat option.
