VIN location on '68 frame

I was told that there is a VIN stamped on the frame of a '68 pickup. Is this true?...where can I find it? I was told it is actually located in 2 places.

Thanks,

Erik

Here it is, courtesy of Longhorn man

the other location where you want to look for the number is on top of the frame under the driver's side cab, some I've heard didn't have it there, oh nad BTW the number is not the whole VIN number that you'd find in your vin tag.

About midway between the driver side cab mounts on top of the frame.

Yep, where I am pointing, and basicly, under the drivers seat on the top of the frame rail (can't see it with the cab on naturally)
This is not a complete VIN though... there is no complete VIN anywhere but on the VIN plate and on the SPID label in the glove box.

Re: VIN location on '68 frame

The trailer that I have at my dads house is a 68 short step that has the frame bent at the front cab mounts to form the tongue has the VIN stamped about 2 inches behind the front mount.

Re: VIN location on '68 frame

passenger side, located around the rear of the door... maybe cab corner area... That would be the frame part number IIRC.

If you use a small mirror, you can see the numbers on top of the frame with the cab on.

Re: VIN location on '68 frame

Thanks everyone!

I am trying to sell a SWB rolling chassis and a guy was telling me that he wanted the title and VIN plate from the cab. He said that he would have trouble to apply for lost title if he didn't have this documentation and that it would hurt the value of the truck. It seemed kind of shady to me. I am only selling the rolling chassis because I am building a custom frame for my truck and I do not need it anymore. I definitely wasn't going to give him any VIN plate off of a cab...that is for sure!

Re: VIN location on '68 frame

You did good by not giving him you VIN tag, IMO the tag should always stay with the cab, a rolling chassis is just that, a rolling chassis.

BTW, why the hell would he need a title for a chassis?

It all depends on the state in question. I understand Cali will check the frame and vin plate against the title, which I hope that info is inacurate, becouse my frame is one digit older than my cab, and I'd be pretty p!ssed if Cali don't let me drive myu truck becouse of that. It's only been like that for 35 years.

Re: VIN location on '68 frame

I think they just check to make sure it is not stolen. I'm going through this issue right now.
