R44TS vs R45TS help...

What is the diffirence in the 2 besides the hotter heat range with the 45's. How does the hotter plug affect the way the motor runs (fuel economy?) along with detonation or preignition ? I have 45TS in it right now with 66 primarys and they are comingout nice and tan. Could I go down to a 44TS and use 64 primary jets and possible still get tan colour plugs?

Thanks for any help.

Re: R44TS vs R45TS help...

Your could try the R44TS plug but I dont think it will do much in the way of helping to go down on your fuel jetting with only one heat range difference, it may help if your getting any detonation, the other thing that helps with performance engines is trying different sparkplug gaps, the wider the gap the hotter the spark, I preffer running a colder plug especially for high performance, I currently run the coldest AC 5/8 tapered plug in my SB 427 with .040 gap, idle is a little rougher because it's not totally burning the fuel off at idle but off idle it rips.

Other note is GM used the R44T or TS in the trucks and the R45TS in the cars with the same motor, only real difference in engines was the camshaft.

I have run both in my truck and don't see any differance in performance. You should not have to mess with the carb settings just to switch plugs. It sounds like you have your carb tuned perfect so you should run the plugs that give you the best performance. Just my opinion.

Re: R44TS vs R45TS help...

I have the 1967 327/350HP cam in my motor with the stock heads redone 3 angle valve job a little porting. So it's basically a car motor then.

I will leave the 45TS in with .40 gap for now.

I was noticing that the truck was not launching right so I just checked the plug wires the one plug felt loose in the hole. So I starte unscrewing it and the actual porclin was spinning inside the steel bolt part. I guess I was loosing alot of compression. It should run alot better now.

Just going down one size wont effect anything. I switched from autolite 26's to A 23-P's and it did reduce a slight amount of the low speed high gear spark gurggle but not as much as I was expecting.

Here is a real good explanation of what a spark plugs function is other than spark

Re: R44TS vs R45TS help...

I went with the colder plug in my my stock 78 Pickup and it did help on part throttle detonation. I had to leave my timing at a stock 8 btdc with the R45 but when I went with the colder plug I could advance up to 12 with no detonation. Runs out smoother, starts quicker, and has more pull at least to my seat-o-the-pants dyno.

It's My Understanding from Porting Sleds - as 2 stokes are very Touchy
when they get Up High in HP and are Ported to the Max .

Harley's also ; Hotter Plugs are Only Gone to when You Go
Up a Full Point on Compression .

A Slightly Cooler Plug Pulls more Heat into the Water Jackets to Be
taken away - by the Cooling system .

Spark Plug Gap is usually Altered with Hotter Coils . .

Especially with the warmer cam I'd probably run the colder plug, everything else being equal. Will help keep any knock more under control.
