I am back from my road trip. Decided to make it short. Drove 1257 miles from NW, Mo. to Texas in one day. Left 5:30 am on thursday and arrived there about 2:00pm. Loaded up and came back. Made 1254 miles no problem. Three miles from home a deer decided to crash headfirst into my drivers door. She went down the side and mashed the bedside. Ripped the mudflap and pushed it through the sidewall of the rear tire. Blew out the tire and sent me for the ditch. She went under the trailer and I drug her to a stop. She got up and ran off like nothing happened. The tire shop had torqued the nuts so tight I could not get them off. Had to walk the last 3 miles home and get tools. Went back and drilled the center out of a couple of studs and the nuts came loose. Estimate to repair is $1987.00. Made it to bed at 6:30 am. 25 hour trip.
Hope everyone else is having better luck.

Sorry to hear about the damages.

Thats a good tip for the studs. I may try that on one of mine that the stud is slowly spinning as I try to take it off. Might brake it loose and come off easier, then replace the stud.

Sorry to hear about that. It's always tough to find a bright side but you weren't injured... which is a good thing.

BTW, I thought most accidents happened within _2_ miles of your home??? If this is the case, this should not have happened (slight grin).

Sorry to hear about the bad luck, but glad you're OK. I had a similar accident several years ago, driving home from the lake, a buck came out of the ditch (it was a deep ditch, and I never saw the deer at all), and hit the passenger side window of the S-10 pickup I was driving. KA-BOOM! Glass flying, heart possibly attacking, underwear possibly becoming stained, near panic situation! I look to the right through the hail of flying glass and am staring at a huge, panic-stricken buck, eyeball to panic striken eyeball! His antlers caught on the top of the cab, or he would have been in my lap! Next, he tumbles down the side of the truck, sounding like he is taking all the sheet metal with him, as I'm hitting the brakes and sliding to a stop (it was a gravel road). The only thing I had for a weapon was a large Mag-lite, so I grab it and jump out of the truck and take off back to where the buck is laying by the side of the road, thinking that if the SOB isn't dead, I'm gonna make him that way, 'cause now I'm pissed! I get to within about 15 feet of him, and he jumps up and takes off, all I could do was flip on the flashlight and watch him go across a field and into the timber. And he was a definate wall-hanger too! Now anger turns to depression as I walk back to survey the damage. But I lucked out, just a broken window glass and mirror glass, scratches from the antlers to the top of the cab, and deer hair sticking out of the trim clear to the taillight, but no body damage. Heart calms, pants OK, slow cautious journey home. Started deer hunting that next fall.

Sorry to hear about your messy misfortune Nu2. Damn wildlife, not only are they messing up our trucks but they suck up all our air too! j/k I always carry a 4 ft. length of pipe to slip on my ratchet handle. That kind of persuasion will loosen ANY lugnut.

Sorry to hear about your bad luck. I'm glad you are OK even though your truck took a hit. I hit a three year old buck last spring. It leapt out after a doe and I hit it with the corner of my front bumper. It died on the spot. Must have crushed it's chest. I got away with just a busted light. Way too many deer around here in the New Jersey suburbs. No hunting allowed.

I got tired of taking my .357 out of my truck every time I got home so I stopped carrying my pesky deer disposer around although hardly a day goes by where I dont see one next to the road on the way to work at 4AM . I drove over a bamby yesterday that wasnt dead more than 5 minutes judging by the pool of blood I drove through. I would never , ever , ever slam on the brakes or swerve to avoid an animal. I'd rather mow the son of a ***** down than take my chances running off the road.

Don't feel bad my wife hit 3 deer with my 84 K-5 with the only damage from them all is a small dent on the right front fender and a out of adjustment headlight. Then one day she comes home and the running board on the right side is half off and the fender emblem is missing and fender crushed in behind the right front tire and wheel opening moulding twisted all up. I ask what happened and she said a turkey crossed in front of my si I took the ditch. I was like you plow 3 deer and don't even swerve and a turkey crosses and you leave the road and tear up the truck? She says I didn't want to mess up the truck so I tried to avoid it by driving into the ditch. LOL I pulled off the running boards and we went to the scene and I made her find the fender emblem. I came home glued it back on and straightened the fender and told her next time hit that sucker Thanksgiving ain't that far away!LOL

I want to thank everyone for their concern. Yes, I'm fine. You know, I moved here because of the deer hunting. Biggest buck in Mo. was killed here four years ago bow season on our back fence. Bow season opens Oct. 1. Guess I am getting an early start.

Teeitup, bought a bed with a nice floor and good right side. Left side could be better but that's the way it goes. I was not supposed to get it. Another guy here wanted it and I (with puter) found it and paid for it. He was to get it and ------ long story. I had to drive down there and get it, he doesnt want it. I'll tell you sometime. I hope to go look tomorrow at the other truck.
Mikep. Cowcatcher. Never hit the brakes for any animal. More people are killed that way than mowing them down. I agree with you.
XXL, the deer must not have read the mile marker. LOL

Everyone: I need a bed for an X-cab full size Chevy. 1990-up.
The insurance will only fix the damage and the bodyshop tells me that they will fix the damage and paint same but will clearcoat the entire bedside. Right over the rust. Why bother.

A friend of mine has an '82 SWB Chevy, that he bought new when he graduated from high school. He kept it nice all along. About 5 years ago, he hit a deer. He had full coverage insurance, but he had to get a lawyer to get anything out of them. They went several rounds before the insurance company settled. It sucks that they have all of their guidelines for valuation and such, then when we need it the most, they total out something that we know can be fixed. Options become limited, at that time.

Glad nobody was hurt in any of the cases that were cited. All info is good. If the deer would cross where the highway departments put the signs, it would be better for everyone.

On a recent trip to/from San Antonio, my wife and I passed 5 deer, all of them grazing along side the shoulder of I-30, in southwest Arkansas. It was an amazing sight.....since it was about 3am, and we had been driving since about 6pm when we left San Antonio. It was good to be awake.

Glad to hear you were not hurt, sucks about the the truck and the way insurance does things. But your ok and the truck can be fixed, I've only hit 1 deer so far in the buick 225, lost the passenger side hub cap and the cd player skip.

Several years ago, one of my uncle's friends and I were on the way to Pigeon Forge for a car show in his 69 chevelle SS. He had just finished this car, after a year and some odd month resto. We were headed down some twisty road when we rounded a corner and in the middle of the road was a buck. Well that chevelle slide all over the road trying to stop and came to rest about 10 feet from the deer. That sob of a deer put his head down and rammed the passenger side of the car just behind the passenger door. He shattered the rear side window, punched about 4 holes in the body and left one good sized dent.
