Short water pump VS long water pump?

So when is a long water pump used and when is a short? Silly questions I'm sure but my BBC didn't come with accessories and I don't know what bling to outfit it with.

I have the short pump and have 4 inches from the tip of the pump shaft to the face of a 4 core radiator, about 6 inches to the front belt on a double pulley. You might could use a long pump, but things would be crowded inside the shroud, and you would definitely need your bolts to be no longer than necessary. I have electric fans, and there is a lot more room.

You buy an engine complete with all the brackets would be one reason. Those P/S A/C alt brackets are expensive. The long pump brackets are easier to find.

The long water pump setup also started in 73 for the trucks. Ditto on what John said.

I used a long pump on my 396 because I wanted to tuck the alt & power steering pump in toward the motor tighter. No radiator clearance problems.

wouldn't this make the alt and power pump farther from the motor?

I ended up with a long cause I had all the brackets and stuff already, then over time ended up with all the March stuff. If I were to do it all at once again, I would have went short and all March acc. or even a electric pump to give me more room for my fans.

Look how close everything tucks on 71Dragtruck's truck in the above pic. You cant do that with a short pump. Your belts would be twice as long...

Actually by using the long water pump the alternator and power steering pumps are closer to the water pump and crankshaft pulley thereby using a shorter belt on both.

out of all the serpentine set ups I have yet to see one with AC? Does anyone have that set up?

Its a March high mount. One thing though is you have to use a reverse rotation 1990 corvette water pump and they arn't cheap.

Well are we certain that the Long pump is 1973 and newer? Because I have a 1968 GMC with a Factory big block and Long style water pump, and I did research on my truck and came to find out that the engine is a Factory replacement motor or Warranty motor from 1971 so its a 402, but it is still a Truck motor, the engine stamp gives that away unless my 1967-72 truck guy here is miss informed.


ALSO since this is about water pumps can anyone help me out with which one to go with I know I want an Aluminum one but I am really on a tight budget so which Aluminum pumps are worth the money I keep hearing about Procomp but I don't know about an Imported part from China! any help would be greatly appreciated. Absolutely. Trucks used short water pumps, both big block and small block, through 72 model year. 73 started long pumps, again, both big and small block trucks.

Well that's weird cause I have all factory parts from 1968 including the external Power steering reservoir and alternator mount. and why would so many people move over to a long pump I have only ever seen long pump big blocks heck even my small block was long and it was from 1969 this doesn't make any sense to me, that the majority of the population would go out and convert over i mean finding the parts and pulley's that match well I guess but that still leaves me with what company I should use for a water pump

I stand by what I said, all 67-72 trucks used short setups from the factory. If any truck has long pump stuff on it, it has been converted in the past.

I agree. Many people use the LWP on a BB due to cost of the short brackets.
You can do it but it will be a tight fit.

Mines Not a Tight fit its got a 2" spacer on the water pump to bring the fan closer to the radiator and its still got enough room to fit another 1" spacer and the power steering Pump and Alternator don't have a tight fit I really think this truck was a factory Long pump or at least the engine cause its all in there with plenty of space

It may not even be an issue for you but the BB pulleys and PS set up with the remote resevoir are worth big bucks to the BB Chevelle guys, these are the same parts used on the early BB Chevelles, so if you make a change just want you to get the most $ out of it.

Really that's good to know!!! Thanks also was the remote Reservoir style pulley system even available in 1973 with the long style water pump because I believe in 1969 Big blocks moved the remote reservoir from the fender to the radiator core support and I believe in 1972 or 1973 the Reservoir moved again to be a part of the pump. does that sound about right?
