Electric rear window

I have been contemplating running an electric rear window in my 72. I have just removed my cab off the chassis and I've popped the rear screen out. Origionaly I wanted just a rear slider but now decided to step it up a bit and turn it into a rear electric window. I will be relocating my fuel tank to the rear for some added clearence or I might just spacer it forward enough to clear the window mechanism.
Has anybody done this mod with sucess?
I'm pretty sure I'll pull this one off but any pics always help.

Check with board vendor WES. I bought a regular slider from him 3 years ago as he is a vendor for CR Laurence. He may be able to get the POWR- Slider. They retail for about $400. It sounds like you want a vertical slider though.

Do you mean a rear window that rolls down into the cab?

I remember seeing them in some trucks a few years back that had them, I think they were conversions though. The companies that put the aftermarket wheels on and spice up the paint a little and charge 10K more for the truck.

there was a mercury from the mid 60's that had a vertical rear sliding window. That might give you some ideas for doing one youself. Dont remember the model of car. Maybe someone knows the car im talking about.

One of the guys who has a shop here at the forum posted pictures of a show truck with a vertical slider. They didn't have any pictures of the guts to show us how it worked.

This thread/question comes up at least once every 4-6 months in this forum, but I have yet to see any real proof or evidence of how this is done, exactly. There are a ton of options - Toyota Land Cruisers have a rear slider in them, and so do a few other truck/SUV type vehicles. You could easily borrow from one.

I got this picture a while back off of the forum and saved it for future referance.

He got an electric window regulator out of a 86 Chevy blazer. He narrowed the sash a little, cut out the pinch weld around the back window and welded in a window channel, cut out the back of the cab under the window ( just the inner peice above the gas tank) and added a 1" box to the back for the window to roll down into it, fabricated a custom stand to bolt the regulator to and then used a piece of custom tempered glass cut 3" taller than the factory glass.

Thats all I have on it. If any one has more infromation or some good ideas of how to pull this modification off I would like to hear them. It would be nice to have some pictures of the internal workings.

5 maybe as much as 7years ago on the original show trucks back when stacey used to actually do stuff before he became a pitchman he did a sliding backwindow conversion that came in a kit but still required alot of fabrication// i've al;so known people who have used capricse guts(motor ,downlimit uplimitswitches sissorsassy aand bottom rail) out of a tailgate and fabbed up trhe tracks drain and other stuff// all the ones i've seen take up at least as much room as the original gastank some were even more bulky than that

for you people with the small windows you could probably get away with a kit from a honda del sol
they're pretty small and the rear window rolls up and down,.

I have a honda del sol regulator that I'm going to use on my 61; small window. I'll post pics when I do it. Those regulators are cool. All cable driven and very compact, but only ~9" of travel.

I built myself a rear back window using the 86 blazer regulator. I have to relocate fuel tank and add a 1" box to the back of the cab. I haven't finished my project yet but the back window works. I had to fabricate a rear bracket to hold the regulator and you can see in the pics. Had to have a piece of custom glass cut also.

Thanks guys, Here in australia we have some station wagons that run an electric rear wind so I might just steal it out of one of the. I'm not too bad with the fab so I'll prob fab all new guide rails myself. I was thinking of either getting a new/larger rear screen made or actually closing up the whole and using the origional screen. I will keep you posted with my activities.

Yeah it's a mid-to-late 50's Mercury Monterey with the "Breezway" package. Very cool car, indeed. Now back to the question at hand. If I recall my Pop's mid 70's Buick Vista-Cruiser wagon had a power window in the rear gate....i'm sure there are other vintage "Land Barges" that also had a power window in the rear gate as well.

I'll dig through my pictures and see if I have any of this before the interior was put back in and no we will not take it out to take any either But it does have a motor on both sides and it's a pain because they are almost impossible to make them clock correctly, this little exercise was left up to the master in the shop.... the mechanical part on a toyota tundra sells new for $600. its a sissors action it looks like you get all the guts of it plus the motor for this price, wheres them toyota yards at

don't forget to incorporate a rain gutter in there todevert water from rain and washings that seeps past the bottom seal out of the cab before it reaches the carpet. it won;t be hard to do but is very much needed, it's not like a tailgate where you just put weep holes outside the seal
