Horn wont shut off

I bought a new grant wheel http://store.summitracing.com/partde...0&autoview=sku and installed it without too much trouble but tonight I went out to start the truck and the battery was dead. After I took the battery off and charged it when I hooked it back up I heard that click like the horn was trying to come on. I unplugged the batter and removed the wheel and it stopped.

I put the grant wheel back on and tightened it down and sure enough same thing. So now it looks like the piece that sits below the grey piece (see attachment pdf since I dont know the name of it) provided in the kit is pushing the black and gold horn ring down and activating the horn. Has anyone come across this and how did you fix it?

Thanks

Re: Horn wont shut off

I'm not sure about nowdays, but last Grant wheel I put on required a specific horn kit. Did you get the specific horn kit?

Re: Horn wont shut off

same thing happened to me both times I nstalled my grant wheel. It's so simple you'll be kicking yourself when you figure it out or at least my problem was simple. I;m having a brain fart right now, but I'm almost postive it has to do with the ground wire . Maybe the ground wire and hot wire are hooked up the opposite of how they should be on the horn button? Sorry I couldn't be more help. I would check on my truck but it's 7 hours away.

Re: Horn wont shut off

On my grant kit there were 2 places to connect the wire. One sounded the horn all the time, the other (I think it was the middle one) worked fine.

Re: Horn wont shut off

On my wheel there is only one wire coming out of it and only one place to go. I talked to a person at Grant today and the only thing that he could come up with was to make sure that the wire that goes down into the plunger makes contact with it. So I took it all apart tonight to make sure thats how it went. Same problem.

So with a meter hooked up to the horn wire and where I could see it I loosened the main steering wheel nut and after 4-5 turns the meter read 0. So I pushed the horn button and it worked. New problem is that the wheel is not on tight enough and I would not drive it like that. So I will be calling Grant again tomorrow.

Anyone else have any ideas about this?

Thanks

The other Brad

Re: Horn wont shut off

When you put the wheel on if the ground connection is touching metal it will stay on.
However, if it just comes on when you hook it up, then something is afoul in the way it is wired.

Re: Horn wont shut off

The horn button is merely a switch, that gives the horn relay ground to complete the circuit. Make sure the isolator is not touching metal, it should float usually on a spring and until you push down on the button causing it to come in contact with the metal under it.

Re: Horn wont shut off

i had the same problem. i solved it by unplugging the horn.
the issue i had was with the installation kit. most autoparts stores sell the grant wheel and some chinese brand of install kit. it is supposed to be an exact grant knock off. for our turcks that knock-off kit is wrong. it will allow the horn to stay on all the time. make sure you have a Grant kit.

another issue i have had with these kits is that the splines will shear off allowing the steering wheel to spin freely from the shaft. i have had two of these hubs strip on my while driving.

talk about corn running down both legs. thats scary.

Re: Horn wont shut off

i think that you pinched the wire that goes to the plunger. check to make sure you didnt mess up the insulation.

Re: Horn wont shut off

Dznucks the kit is a Grant kit unless the knock ofss have Grant boxes now slug I checked the wire and it is not pinched. I called Grant again today and the guy I spoke to thinks that it could be the plunger touching the metal hub somehow as I tighten down the wheel. So he suggested that I take some electrical tape and tape around the plunger so it does not hit the hub.

Re: Horn wont shut off

I had the same problem with mine,so i hit the little brass thing on my grinder just enough to stop the horn from blowing on its own. My little brass thing was tight, and the horn would blow every time i started to tighten the wheel. hope this helps.

Re: Horn wont shut off

Tried grinding the brass thing down. No luck. I picked up a new kit and it appears to be working. I dont get 12 volts to the horn wire unless I push the button now. I turned the wheel left and right picked up and down on it and it seemed to behave. I will go out tomorrow and check the battery. If its dead then I will check out the horn wire. If its pulling power then its getting unplugged and I am moving on to the next thing I need to work on I can always come back to it later.

Exclamation Re: Horn wont shut off

skoike,

I'm going the other direction, I'm trying to go the other direction. I'm trying to go back to stock. I didn't put the Grant wheel on mine. I need to know if there was a collar that was removed to allow instalation of the Grant wheel. I need the part that put the stock wheel back on. If you still have them and want to part with them please let me know. I would be interested.

Thanks....

Re: Horn wont shut off

All I had on my 68 was the wheel itself. I didnt see a collar anywhere.
