squeaking carrier bearing

Hey guys, I would like to here some of yall's opinion on this. I just converted my 70 swb fron a 3spd manual to a th350, when I put my driveshaft back in i noticed my carrier bearing started squeaking. I had the shaft laying under a carport but it still got some moisture to it. I was wondering if the 350 sits in the truck maybe a little higher than the 3spd causing stress to the bearing or is it just time to replace it? Btw it looks like the original bearing. Local shop quoted me about $150 to replace all u jouints & bearing. I might see about converting to 1 piece but what do ya'll think.

Re: squeaking carrier bearing

Make sure the metal support is centered over the bearing, sometimes the rubber can rub on the metal cups on the shaft. Loosen the bolts on the support to adjust. If you tightened the support before connecting the rear ujoint that could be the problem, else looks like new parts time.

Get a poly support if you need a new one.Spendy, but real nice. Thread on here somewhere about those.

Re: squeaking carrier bearing

ok it does sound like like a rubber squeak, + it only does it on a certain part of the revolution. So I need to loosen the bolts on the carrier to adjust it? I actually think I did tighten the support first. Thanks for the info you may have just saved me $150

Re: squeaking carrier bearing

But, 150 for all u-joints and carrier bearing complete is a normal price. I've got to change mine here in the next few weeks and that's the price I'm staring at.

If it's the rubber spinning in the housing, don't go on any long distance trips- you'll be replacing it soon. Go with 1-piece. You'll be glad you did.
