No factory rear view mirror?

When I got my 69 stepper...it had like a 40's style car rear view mirror in it. When I took the screws out of it...I noticed that there were no screw holes for the original mirror. Anyone ever heard or seen mirror delete?

Re: No factory rear view mirror?

Does it even have indentations where it mounts?

In the old days these trucks could be ordered with or without just about any options, but I've never seen one without a rear view mirror.

Also, didn't the 72's have the mirror on the windshield? If that's the case, maybe someone swapped cabs...

Re: No factory rear view mirror?

This is the original cab. The guy that my brother got it from got it from the original owner. I called the guy and he said when he got it...it had on rear veiw mirror in it. He had it from 93 to 98 when my brother got it. No markings for the mirror to be drilled. I had to measure and center and level before I drilled the center hole.

Re: No factory rear view mirror?

My K-20 was a State Highway Dept. truck and had no inside mirror. Had the radio delete as well.

Re: No factory rear view mirror?

My 72' has the mirror mounted on the windshield. I've looked it up to make sure it's the correct mirror, because the visor on the driver side hits the mirror when i try to put it down. I'd ditch it, if i didn't use it. Plus, i'm running it without side mirrors currently, so, i need something. But yeah, they were mounted on the windshield.

Re: No factory rear view mirror?

i have a 69 swb 4wd...came with 292 six, a huge 3spd (much larger than my 72K5) a rockwell T-221 transfer case and as i began to pull it apart the original paint appears to be army green/forest truck green...it has no rear view mirror or any type of mounting spot for it....i have wondered about this too...Edited by Moderatorthanks...scott

Re: No factory rear view mirror?

I believe the rear view mirror was an option thru 69, then standard in 70. Someone correct me if i'm wrong.

Re: No factory rear view mirror?

My 68 didn't have a mirror either and no holes or anything for the mounting of one. I wanted one so I mounted a laterstyle one to the windshield..

I got the same problem, the visor hits the mirror, and it's all factory stuff.

BTW, my '69 has a "ceiling" mounted mirror.

Re: No factory rear view mirror?

67 - 69 had no mirror as base equopment. If opted with a mirror, it was mounted to the ceiling. Many were sold as a dealer add on when the buyer ordered a truck and upon pickup, had no mirror. This explains older style mirrors (67/68 style) mounted on 67 - 69.
In 70, they became standard, but still mounted on the cab ceiling.
In 71, they incorporated a raised mounting point on the cab ceiling to mount the mirror.
In 72, it was moved down to the glass where it could fall off and GM could sell you a replacement.

Maybe just another shorter head mount will do.

Re: No factory rear view mirror?

camino... this very question was the second question i asked when i signed up. A former member educated me, and then i searched and found the rest of the story.
In all reality, now that I think about it... I think there was one year in 67 - 69, where the inside one was base equipment.
None the less... my second truck was a 69 GMC short/fleet 1500, had a 67/68 style mirror, and it wasn't centered properly. My first truck was a 70, and I figured they were all like that 70 was. So I asked and learned.

My second truck was a 70. The first was a 56. Well one thing is...you keep educating people here for questions like that. I would have never known. Now ask me about El Caminos....Chevelles...Cutlass/442/F-85...Firebird/Trans Am....Le Mans/GTO...I can tell you everything about them. I have always loved this body style of truck. But I havent had alot of them to know what I know about what I mentioned.

So Andy...and the rest of you guys...thank you for being here to educate the rest of us here.

(yes at 40 you can still learn something! )

My 68 C20 had no inside also, but had two round mirrors outside. Belonged to a city before me.

It's a car/truck. I had a 79' with a 305. used to ride around town sitting on a milk crate cuz i had no seats. True pimpin'.

I noticed the arm rests in the 72' are basically useless as an armrest while driving. It's way too low, unless i sit funny. I use it to shut the door.

I decided to use the mirrors off my 61' Triumph for side mirrors on the truck. Clamp em up on the doors like the clamp on style ones.
