5 speed tranny for 235? - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I'm builing my dad a truck and I'm trying to find a 5 speed transmission that can either bolt on or be adapted to fit a 235 inline 6 cyl. The truck is a hybrid 1950 and 1952 Chevy half ton with the best parts taken from each. He really wants to keep the 235 since he had a truck with the same engine when he was younger. I want to upgrade the tranny for him though and would appreciate any feedback on which tranny would work best. I'm also not against a solid 4 speed, just anything to ditch the 3 on the tree! Thanks.

I have a 53 Chevy with the I-6 and it has a Saginaw 4 speed which works great..............but you will need to cut or remove the bench seat as the shifter is located back into the seat area. The truck has buckets seats which cured that problem. You will also need to change the driveshaft to a open drive line which will work better with a new rear end, Camaro, Nova, Monte Carlo etc.. I also have a 55 1st series that I had a Saginaw 3 speed which was a better fit as the linkage was far enough forward that I did not have trouble with the seat and I already had a open driveline so that was not a problem. I think the mounting surfaces for the transmission are the same, someone correct me!!

Watching this since I have two 235's. Looking at the rear bellhousing flange on the 235's I'd guess a NV 3500 would work from any 90's 1/2 ton trucks, a T5 from the S-10 or even a camaro, and the trans will use the 235 bell housing from the current 3 on the tree, and finally a muncie or saginaw 4-speed will work as well. There is a company out there that has manufactured an OD 4th gear for the muncie to run a .89:1 ratio (not as much of an OD as the NV3500/t5/700r4) but better than 1:1 as it would be in 4th.

Stovebolt's site has some info, doesn't seem too hard, but as mentioned if you have the tube type driveshaft cover (original rear, drivetrain) then you need to do the rear end swap, and the alignment dowels may need tweaking to get the alignment right, but should be fairly easy.

Info that I got from a co-worker who just did his. Direct bolt-in. His trans is from an '84 S10; up to 87 or 88 would work as well. Somewhere in the late 80s, they went from the mechanical speedo to electronic, so watch that. He also did a cool adapter on top of the box that moved the shifter pivot point and shortened up the throws.

But like I said, all I had to do was change the friction plate, not the driven plate and the throwout bearing like some of describe.

Another good source is Dave Moore ( Dmoore5356@aol.com ). He is the tech guy for Jim Carter parts. He has done several of these swaps.
